Hey guys,

I've got a printer that is connected up to the network and we can all print from it from our PCs so its working fine in that department.

However, I cannot seem to Scan a document from the printer, to my computer, across the network. Is this a common 'problem' with networked printers?

The current software I have now, which came with the printer only allows me to scan to my computer via it plugged in USB 2.0 - of course this isn't good!

I was wondering if its a network issue, or if theres 3rd party software available that you guys use and could reccomend?

Hope this is in the correcto forum area :).

Thanks,
Gangster.

It's a "feature".

Even the £4k MFDs we use at work won't scan over a network per se - they scan internally then email you a TIFF/PDF file.

Thanks for the reply. So basically its not possible -- the document that you want to put on PC has to be connected to it via USB 2.0?

Are all the network settings correct, such as subnet mask? Does it need to have a domain name added for the scanning to work correctly? Does it need perhaps a different TCP/IP Protocol setup for it to work? We have an expensive plan copier at work that refused to work and it need an LRP Protocol installing on the PC for it to work correctly...

You've not said what the device is.

Apps on the PC will be looking for a TWAIN device and I can't see how you would bridge to that over a TCP/IP WiFi connection. Wireless scanning using Bluetooth is possible as its designed for point to point peripheral connections (sllloooowww tho). WiFi is a network connection not a peripheral standard.

I think they're correct - thing is the software doesn't have any settings for me to edit (so I cant tell it where to look). This is why I was hoping for some 3rd Party Software of some sort.

Its a Canon Mp520, hooked onto a Print Server.

How does the office jet work - what is the model no please? Do you mean anybody on the network can control it?

You'll need a third party program to allow you to do this.

We use a program could remotescan to do this. You buy a server licence and then decide on how many client licences you need. You install the server side on the pc that has the scanner connected to it and the client side on the pc's that require access to it. It's not the cheapest option as it's about £100 for a server licence but it's pretty foolproof to setup and use as it can be used via Word.

However there are bound to be other software programs availble that could be cheaper but I'm just going on my experiences with it via where I work.

Define print server. Is it a server or a jet direct type thing? Can you not remote onto the server and do the scanning there, then just copy the file across?

They are pretty poo then. Our much cheaper Infotec stuff comes with a TCP/IP TWAIN driver, allowing you to scan in normally across a network.
