Hey,

I just got a new computer, and want to network it with my laptop.

I have a netgear DG843G v2 router with a Netgear wireless card in my laptop and the computeris connected via a ethernet cable.

I want to netowkr it, ive done the netowkring stuff you have to do I think but my laptop dont show at all on my comp and vice versa for the laptop?

All I have done is the windows networking thing.

Help is verp apprechiated.

Dave!

What do you get from Start, run, \\[Other machine's IP]?
Output from ipconfig /all would be a start too. Shouldn't be that much "networking stuff" to do - the router should handle DHCP etc.

I take it you have run the network setup wizard? Make sure that both machines are on the same workgroup, for some reason mine didnt work when the systems were on MSHOME but after I changed it they all saw each other. Try pinging the other pc and post the results.

EDIT : someone got there before me

Nope, the other PC isnt picking up this one and vice versa. When running the IP all I get is "\\IPADDRESHERE

The network path cannot be found"

Any other ideas?

How ya ping them? (never had to do much netowrking before, soz for stupidness.)

Both the firewalls are off, the router firewall is stll on though.

Okey, I have had a bit of luck. Went in the router settings and went onto connected devices, ran one of the IPs in there and got my alppy (even tho thats not the actual IP of that comp).

So hopefully it SHOULD work now ok

Can now access my laptop from my PC, now to do the other way round >.<

EDIT: All I get whne trying to acess my comp is

""\\IPADDY is not accessable"

and all the contact admin stuff.

Dave

Any more advice lol?

Okey, now the comp shows up in the network folder but when I click it I get the error message...

"\\Dave is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin of the server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found."

Any help, ta.

I'm presuming both PCs will be on the same subnet as the ip's are assigned by DHCP on your router?

You need to have the same user accounts on both PCs for them to be able to access each other, same username and same password. you should still be able to ping them though as that is not controlled by windows. Check your router is allowing packets to be passed accross the wireless to cable network, i know some routers that block this, althought it is rare. The check that the firewalls on both your PCs allow ICMP/Ping requests, disable the firewalls temporarly if you need to. Are you only using Windows firewall or are you running 3rd Party Firewalls too?
