Networking House, Few Questions :D

Hey All,

Im looking to network my house via cable. There will be around 2 ports on average per room adding up to a total of around 14 connections in total. Im looking to get a Gigabase CAT5e Patch Panel 24 Port and was wondering what would be the best way to connect each port to the internet . I have a Modem with Ethernet connection which is currently plugged into a wireless router which i would also wish to maintain on the network for wireless devices around the house

I did mine with 2 ports in 4 rooms going to a central point in the house where my rackmount cabinet is. in total I have 8 points and 8 main points labled up. I ran the cable through the walls and cut out a hole for the points where the double sockets lie and ran it up behind the plaster board. Now I am wireless free and nice n tidy. Took while but worth it.

I'd plug a switch into the wireless router and patch all room ports into that. If your router has the normal four LAN ports, you may find it cheaper to use two 8-port switches rather than one 16-port.

If you do use multiple switches, bear in mind that there'll be a bottleneck in the connection between the switches unless the connection between them is faster than the sum of the ports (ie 2 switches with 8x100Mbps ports would ideally need a GigE interconnect). More expensive switches will quite often have a special (frequently proprietary) port for this purpose, but that blows away the cost saving over buying a single 16-port.

It's certainly a consideration but the OP only mentioned connecting the PCs to the internet.

if your getting a patch panel im guessing you have a rack mount for it to go into, so instead of getting 2 small switches why not just get 1 single rackmount switch that you can use cables between itself and the patch panel, and have the wireless router simply pluged into the switch too and rest it ontop of the switch.
