Hi guys, after a quick bit of advice!

My LAN here is immense and I really enjoy networking and everything surrounding it and I want to get into it properly as a career, but I have no idea how to get my foot on the ladder!

Basically, I have set up Cisco/3Com/Intel/Netgear kit here, our LAN has 8 different VLANs, uses OSPF dynamic routing, LACP trunks and god knows how many Linux-based tools! Its mainly gigabit copper but there is a fibre spur with all the servers on!

I've tried to include this on my CV but as I haven't done it as a job I don't really know how to put it across!

Those of you that are in the industry, how would someone like me break into a job with relatively little job experience? (I do have some experience of critical production systems, but through the Uni radio station so again not a proper job...)

Thanks!

You have some really good experience there and certainly I think you could pick up a good NOC role. As the saying goes, experience counts more than qualifications in IT. I have been advised numerous times to list as many technologies as you are familiar with at the start of your cv. Personally I dont like this but recruiters seach for keywords on jobsites (e.g Red Hat) and you want them to see this on your CV before your experience (or lack thereof).

Dont be too disheartened if you dont find something straight away because the IT market, particularly contracting is very weak right now. I know a few very experienced admins who spent months looking for work.

Good luck mate!

As said above, you have some good experience already. Start applying for some NOC jobs (May have to do shift for a while). You'll get good (ish) money and can start building your self up to something more exciting.

Make sure you put all this stuff on your CV under "Technical Skills" or something. Also, I'd recommend getting a CCNA under your belt, if you do it properly and learn from the books you'll get a pretty solid understanding of core networking topics and it'll look good on your CV. I'm not saying stop looking for a job while you do this as I think the whole experience vs. qualifications argument is stupid (Do both!).

I've worked in this industry for 6 years and started off much the same as you (Probably with less knowledge though, certainly wasn't messing about with OSPF at home ;) ) and have done pretty well for myself.

As long as you have the right attitude and keep learning you'll do very well.

If you have any specific questions about the industry just ask but my experience is mainly with Telcos and ISP's.

Good luck!
