Hi,
I have an HP color Laserjet 4550N, and it has an ethernet socket in the back of it.
Is it possible to just plug the printer into my wireless belkin router via the ethernet port to allow the printer to be used by every computer on that network?
Cheers

for sure.

not to sure about small network set up.

but for my 15 network printers, I have them installed on a printer server as local printers and give them a tcp/ip port.

then i just add printer from the machines that need to use them.

i have it connected via the network cable to my router, and lights at both ends are solid green. However, i can't seem to find the printer on the computers, i have tried using HPs network setup utility but it says it cannot find any printers on the network :s
any ideas?
Cheers

i have done this before with a HP Jetdirect print server, you need to find its ip address then do the following

open control panel --> Printers --> Add new printer
add local printer
select port --> ip address
type in IP_123.456.1.1 (whatever your address is for the printer)
follow the on screen instructions and it will ask you to install the printer drivers

Yip that should work with no problems at all. Windows should pick it up as a Jet Direct card just fine.

As said before, you will need to find the IP out from the printer to which if you have DHCP enabled on your belkin router it will grab one. If it hasn't i'd set a static one using the front panel. You can also use the front panel to check to see what dynamic IP it has been allocated too.

Yep, that works fine.

Just done that tonight for a mate with an HP 2575 All-in-one that was connected up to his Netgear DG834GT and was not showing anywhere within Windows although it was showing as an attached device in the router settings.

cheers for the help! :)

i'm just waiting for 2 new 10m ethernet cables to come in the post so i can plug everything bk up because i've had a shift around of all the computers/routers in the house and need longer cables.

when i get them i will print off a config page to get the IP and then try to add the printer and let you know how it goes

i've just been through the printer menu
i found the network settings menu, atm it is set as DHCP off, TCP/IP on, and the IP is set at 192.168.1.10.
I've changed it to IP 192.168.2.10 (because my router is 192.168.2.1), and changed the GW to 192.168.2.1.
I'm taking it GW is the gateway IP? so for my router it would be 192.168.2.1?

Also, what does the 'LG' stand for?
the IP in 'LG' seems to be empty (0.0.0.0) as default.

Not sure what the LG stands for, consult your manual. If you don't have one go to the HP website and look.

I would have set it to DHCP so you can configure it via the HP utility first and make sure if its not brand new to do a factory reset on it.

LG will be the log server's IP (just leave it as I presume you don't have one on the network), that's what it was on our old 4050TN IIRC.

The cable came yesterday and i got it working :D
I couldn't use the windows printer install system for some reason, i had to run the HP install program and type in the 192.168.2.10 IP.
It's working great on all computers now, so there is no longer any need for me to keep one computer running to share the printer haha.

Wireless printing is great......I have a Linksys wireless print server running here, no issues over 3 years or so.

Set up a Netgear wireless print server on a Netgear wireless network with a Canon inkjet the other evening, works a treat. Easier to setup than the Linksys one. Well impressed.
