networking problems

hi

i shared my internet with my brothers pc,for him to use for school.The problem i am having is that it only works if my pc is on.The settings i have chosed on his network options is to get ip and gateway automaticly,is this right?my pc is running windows 2000 and his runs windows xp i am no network genius so not sure how to set it up so my pc does not need to be on for him to use internet.The router i am using is a netgear dg834

are both computers connected directly to the router then? Are both set to get their ips automatically? If so i'm not sure why you would need your main computer on for the internet to work on the other machine...

yea both pcs are connected to router and both are set to get settings automaticly.
