I'm going to uni this weekend and am leaving a computer at home. This computer will be on so I want to be able to control it while I am at uni. How can I do this? Both the computer I will be controlling and the computer I will use to control it are behind firewalls.

Using the remote desktop utility woul be fine (using it at the mo to monitor the computer) but I don't know how to connect via the internet.

Remote software is your only answer to be honest, although you might struggle to use it through a uni firewall as they tend to block a lot of ports so I have heard. I use remote administrator to control my downloading rig in my house and it works perfectly.

Take it with you? :p, tbh, you're probably never going to use it much.

Its noisy unfortunaly so its relegated to the loft, it in no way is going anywhere near my uni bedroom! It also runs BOINC (seti etc) so is being used all the time. ;)

I am in a house with 4 others not halls luckily (and i'm the only one that knows how to fiddle with the router :D ) so the router will not be an issue. What is remote administrator?

logmein.com

I just tried this and it doesnt seem to want to install. I can't get it to connect when I enter my details in the installation. At the moment it is networked through this computer so I will try a direct connection.

If you have windows XP Pro you can use remote desktop.
Probably the simplest. You can get it to work by either opening port 3389, setting up an SSH server and tunneling through SSH, or setting up a full blown VPN. These obviously vary in complexity and security.

Make that TCP port 3389

The Remote Desktop Client supports encryption (my office uses it for remote access) and I would say for home users should be fine.

SSH should be fine.

I wouldn't use VNC as it doesn't use encryption (for the freeware client anyhow)

Depending on the routers you are using a site to site VPN may be possible (depending if you are assigned a static IP & your hardware)

All this stuff is going way over my head. Unfortunatly I don't have a static IP (although it is as good as static atm)

Logmein is probably the easiest if i can get it to work as it liiks like they do all the hard work which is a plus.

Remote Desktop Connection + www.no-ip.com + a correctly configured router = a better solution than logmein.

Logmein only becomes useful when your trying to get passed work firewalls.
