Hey guys,

I'm trying to network an xp and a vista machine together.

Ive got them both connected to my router and they can both access the internet ok.

Ive set them both up on the same work group shared all the drives etc but they can't seem to see each other.

Ill go to map network drive browse etc but I just can't see the other PC. I also can't see the shared printer (connected to the vista PC)

Any ideas?

Thanks guys.

I've done a quick google and forum search but nothing has helped.

dynamic or manual ip address's? make sure they're on the same subnet either way

what firewalls are you using?

run... cmd and type 'ipconfig /all' on both computers and post the output

also in vista open 'network and sharing center' and make sure network discovery and file sharing are turned on

Unfortunately mine are the same but it still doesn't work. Will have another whack at it after the exams as I think maybe I was a bit too adventurous in turning off some of the windows services.

I had this issue and theres a couple of aspects which I found I needed, especially as you seem to be having printer networking issues too.
Username and Passwords need to be the same on both systems or atleast listed in the 'user' list.

ie xp has
name 1, password 1 as a user
vista has
name 1, password 1 as a user, shared folders configured to allow username access etc.

I've also found sp3 makes a huge difference to xp networking with vista

Ok. Ive changed the user name on both accounts to the same thing. I can now access the xp pc from the vista pc but not the other way round.
The vista pc shows up in the workgroup but I can't access any of the shared drives.

After a bit of poking around I noticed that my ethernet adapter was using both IPv4 and IPv6 which led to IP resolution problems and hence not being able to view shared files across the computers. I've since set it to use only IPv4 and nearly every issue has been resolved except the internet connection sharing which still isn't working. You can find this setting in the network adapter's property page.

Hope this helps you Ardmanz in some way.

Edit: My laptop (XP) still can't see my desktop (Vista) but file sharing is working between my dad's laptop (Vista) and my desktop and I can see and access files on my laptop from wither of the other two computers.

Still no shared internet connection though.
