Hi folks

I've setup a network ok with several PCs running Win7 & XP.

I have no probs with read/write from XP to Win7 ONLY if sharing folders within the 'Public' folder, so I guess most settings are correct.

I need full read/write from XP machine to Win7 OUTSIDE of the Public folder.

Any help much appreciated.

You need to read and write files stored on the XP or 7? And from which do you need to do the reading/writing from?

Sorry - to be clearer....

The files/folders will be located on the Win7 PC

The folders need to be mapped as network drives on the XP machine, and read and written to FROM there.

Thanks

Okay, if you right click on the folder you want to map and select properties.
Then click on the sharing tab
Then go to advanced sharing
Select "share this folder" and give it a name
Click permissions and add "everyone" and give them full control

You should then be able to access and read/write the files on the Win7 from XP

That's exactly what I've been doing, but I still get an Access Denied error message:-(

The network itself is fine. All 'pngs' work correctly, and I can access all the 'Public' folders.

It's driving me nuts this.

Any more ideas most welcome

thanks

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes I was.

BUT, I have just solved the problem - phew!

REALLY basic user error you'd probably call it;-)

When I looked at the file icons on the Win7 PC, there were little padlocks on them, although I'd gone through all the steps in the Networking Centre.

All I did was right click the files and reselect read/write'

I don't understand why I had to that even after going the other proceedures, but I guess I'll get my head round it eventually.

Ahhhhg!

I spoke to soon - still can't access those folders from the XP machine?

Surely, the folders i'm trying to share should end up with a shared icon? They haven't so far.

When I go into 'permissions', the read/write boxes are ticked.

Try going through network places? Find the computer and then see what its sharing?

Actually...

Go into this and change your settings so they are the same as mine, I have a folder stored on my HDD that i have set up to be shared via the network and had to change something in these options to make it work properly. Cant remember which it was though...

Yeh, mine are the same.

I have no idea how or why, but one of the two folders concerned is now accessable from the XP PC!!! I can see no difference with the settings. One is on C: (system disk), the other is on a separate data disk (D:), which show up as a Network Place on Client PC, I just can't open it.

I have one drive shared and One "shared" folder located in My documents, both are accessible from my laptops and my XP desktop...

Can you connect to the shared folder by unc path.
what account are you using to authenticate to the shared resource
Are all pc`s member of same workgroup
have you tried using the net view command on both pc`s - do the results on both reflect what your sharing?,

Try re-sharing folder using computer management mmc
