Hi all, i have just purcahsed a couple of 200Mbps adaptors to network over my electrical cabling. Im intending to have one by my router so that i can get internet all over my house. I did a basic test and am getting about 50-60mbit through them (think thats 6 - 7 megabytes/s ; perfect for streaming hd material too :) )Im intending to put the other in a room where im going to have my ps3, xbox 360 and possibly pc too. so i could be having 3-4 devices in one room. Now, to make sure all 3 can access the net (and without swapping cables between them into the powerline plug), what is the easiest way to get them all connected. Do i:

1) need to buy 3 powerline adaptors (ie 1 for each device)
2) Need to buy a switch (and what speed)
3) Can i use an old router (like a netgear dg834g) to do the same as number 2 above.

I would prefer to use number 3 if possible as it means i have everything already, but im not sure and would appreciate your advice!

cheers

If you don't mind 100Mbps, the DG834G would do fine as a switch. Just disable DHCP on it first.

Yeh 100mbps should be ok, considering the powerline is operating at ~ 50mbps. Im glad about that, will save me some cash and utilise some of the junk i have accumulated. Thanks

Hi tolien / others wonder if i could pick your brain.

I am trying to setup the network as follows. I have a spare thomson speedtouch 780wl router (from when i was with Be, my brother has the other dg834g). i have my ps3/xbox 360 and pc connected into the lan ports, and into lan port 1 a cat5 cable going to the powerline adaptor. in this arrangement the ps3 and xbox 360 connect absolutely fine with no problems to the internet (the other powerline is connected upstairs into the modem). Its with the pc i am having problems.

I am running vista and it connects to the thomson router fine, but it wont use the thomson to connect to the net. If i plug the powerline directly into the lan port on the pc it works perfectly and i can surf in vista fine. So going through the thomson router will not work in vista, but the consoles work regardless.

Anybody know a reason why or have a solution? When i boot in windows xp it works perfectly connecting through the thomson.

Does the pc use DHCP and has the router been setup to allow it access?
I had similar issue, turns out the pc had a static ip that wasnt within the IP range on my router.
Hehe, sometimes the simplest thing eh!

the pc does use dhcp, but does that need to be turned off on the pc? I disabled dhcp on the router (as tolien described earlier), but this did not help because the pc would not get an ip address, it would remain in limited conectivity no matter what i tried...

To be honest im not liking the the 780wl router all that much, seems difficult to configure. there is also an issue with the 4th lan port only being reserved for video/audio use. i need to hack into it to enable it for normal use but getting confused with all the instructions on the net.

This should be simple to do but is now getting more and more complicated :(

The problem is that in vista, the computer sees the router, but doesnt use the router to connect to the net via the powerline adaptor. In xp it works fine, no configuration needed. Damn vista!

So you have the 780WL, with PS3, Xbox and a PC connected directly to it and a Homeplug adapter with another PC at the other end?
There shouldn't be anything different with either Vista or XP - it's just ethernet...

sorry im confusing you guys!! ill try explaining it better.

Upstairs:

Sky Netgear DG834GT connected via ADSL.
Lan Port 1 ---> Zyxel Powerline adaptor 200Mbps
Lan Port 2 ---> Brothers pc via ethernet

Downstairs:

2nd Powerline adaptor: (has ethernet cable going to port 1 of 780WL router)

780WL adsl modem/ wireless router

Lan Port 1 ---> to 2nd zyxel powerline adaptor (as above)
Lan Port 2 ---> PC
Lan Port 3 ---> PS3
Lan Port 4 ---> Xbox 360

In this configuration ps3 and xbox work fine, they access XBL and PSN with no problems. However the PC when running vista will not connect to the net..instead it will be directed to the 780WL web router interface.

However, in the above configuration, when booting in xp it works fine. Everything works together with no problems.

The only way i can get vista to work is to disconnect everything and have my pc connected directly to the powerline and NOT through the router.

I hope that makes things clearer. Thanks for the input guys :).

Yes, opening internet explorer in vista goes to the 780wl interface.. sky router has dhcp on.

With dhcp 'on' the 780wl, the ps3, xbox and win xp worked fine. With dchp 'off' on the 780wl nothing got a ip address, and nothing worked. Surely vista must be doing something to mess it up because with no configuration , windows xp and everything else works..

Thought I'd sneak in and ask mu powerline questions.

I am installing a router for a mate next week and his house is huge the the rotuer cant reach the attic room where the pc is and the other room wher his x box is.

I plan to put in powerline system to the rotuer an need to know if these things work in pairs?

Can I put one powerline on the router and one in each of the rooms.

Do the two routers have different IPs?

When everything is working fine with xp running the 780wl is not seen, only the sky netgear one on 192.168.0.1, as it normally would be. i cant access the 780wl in that setup..How do i check the ip if the 780wl?

seems to be working now after switching the powerline to port4 and the other devices into ports 1-3...have no idea why, but frankly, i dont care! lol... thanks for all the input lads :)

To be honest, the trouble you have i'd just nip to a local electronics retailer (that seems to be filtered as a swearword) or somewhere and buy a 4 port 10/100 switch for £15-20. Ebay the router to cover the cost :)

you need 2 to start a network, then one more for each additional device

Hi all, all is working fine with the 780wl...i tried telnet into the router and typed a few commands from another forum. DOnt know if it worked but plugged the powerline into the 4th port and the devices into the other 3, and all are working fine. Im glad as its saved me £15-£20 pounds and whats even better is that you dont need a powerline for every device! Am really happy with the setup.
