I've setup a workgroup in Snow Leopard but my other windows machine is not showing up in network browser. I can connect to it directly in finder using both IP and netbios name. Any ideas why it's not showing up? I think it might be firewall related, but I don't know which ports need to be open for it to show up. If anyone could help me out I'd be most appreciative! :)

The way I done it is as follows;

Windows-

  • Enable sharing on your drive (I assume you know how to do this)
  • Name it something appropriate e.g. Movies, Music

Mac-
  • On your mac go to Finder (or click the desktop)
  • Press cmd+k (This will open a 'Connect to Server' window)
  • Type: smb://your windows pc name here
  • Hit enter and it'll connect to your windows machine then a little box will pop up asking which drive to connect to

Or you can type for example:
  • smb://serenity-pc/Movies

To go straight to the movies drive.

This is the way I done it, there could be different ways to do it but this is by far the easiest I know of so far. :)

Yeah that's the way I'm having to do it, but I just thought it would be nice if my windows machine appeared in the Network Browser. Found lots of forum posts revealing issues with getting this working in Windows 7...
