never bought a sata drive b4 do I buy sata 1 or 2 ?

Either SATA1 or 2 will work fine, the SATA2 standard is backwards compatible.

You may have to remove a jumper or in the case of Hitachi drives use a software tool to enable SATA2 mode on the drive though. You should be aware, however, that there is virtually no difference in performance between the two standards because the physical moving parts of the disk cannot supply data at anything like SATA1 speeds let alone SATA2. The burst transfer speed will show a difference in benchmarks but in real life this isn't going to be noticeable.

SATA1 is 150mbs so not very different from ATA133. Although there may not be much difference between similar drives on the different interfaces, what you will get by buying SATA2 is newer faster drives. I've just been installing XP on a Samsung 250GB SATA2 drive and a Maxtor 80GB SATA1 on the same SATA2-capable PC and found it was hugely faster on the SATA2 drive.
