Hi,
Moving away from consoles.... Had enough of buying a new one every couple of years. Iv looked into parts and have finally decided on what to get but I'm unsure whether to build it myself or not as iv not done this before.
This build iv planned would also use a water cooler...... Is this a good idea for a first build or is this a Disaster waiting to happen?
Thanks for reading

Kind regards

An AIO (all in one) or a custom loop?

Depends how willing you are to risk it? It really isn't hard, and takes little to no technical ability really. Espically with youtube etc.

An AIO is no different to installing an air cooler, sometimes it's easier.

I was thinking about a custom loop to be honest, but have no knowledge on what to do . Thought I'd ask here for some advice first before I research the hell out of youtube.
Would it be good to practice connecting up before putting everything inside the case? I get that everything would have to be disconnected and dried before I actually put everything in

Depending how much power you want, ability to tweak settings, resolution and framerate increases, you could be changing parts sooner than you think.

Current xbox gen is lightly to stay relevant for several years yet thanks to the push on gamepass subscription services.

If you buy PC now you've lightly only got a single generation or 2 (if compatible) of life available on the CPUs.
Not a big issue as it's frequently the case anyway. But it just highlights that if you buy a weaker processor now, you'll not likely future proof yourself very well.
With Intel even, 4yr old CPUs aren't even cheap second hand still!

But building is fun, do it based on that and you'll have no issues with whatever you decide.

Theses are the main parts that planning on getting;

CORSAIR CRYSTAL 680X RGB WHITE LARGE GAMING CASE
AMD RYZEN 9 3900X 3.8GHZ 12 CORE 24 THREAD PROCESSOR

CORSAIR ICUE H115I RGB PRO XT 280MM LIQUID CPU COOLER

MSI MPG X570 GAMING PRO CARBON

Gigabyte GEFORCE RTX 2080 SUPER 8GB GAMING OC V2 GRAPHICS CARD

850W - CORSAIR HX850I FULLY MODULAR PLATINUM RATED

Not to shatter the illusion, but PCMR gaming is also fairly expensive at the higher end :p A new £400+ console every 6-7 years is hardly a lot. But if you want to join the PCMR, something like the above PC you mention is going to set you back best part of £1500+ and then when you enjoy the PCMR, you'll start doing odd upgrades every year or two. But it is much more fun than a console, and you can do a lot more on PC than just game too :D

If this is just to game on and you have a decent budget to blow, I'd still save some change and start with a 3700X CPU and 2070S GPU. Only thing is, we all keep bleeting on about it lately but it's true... Nvidia's next-gen graphics cards are due out mid-September, so if you can wait til then (it's only 6 weeks) your £500-700 spend on a GPU then will get you a much better card than it will now :)

If you still really want a PC rig now, then get a 2070S then sell it and upgrade later if you really want. But you'll obviously lose some money selling it 2nd hand later and then buying next-gen.

Do you already have a monitor btw? If you're buying something like a 2070S/2080S then you'll want at least a 1440p high-refresh rate monitor to enjoy it all in it's glory.

Custom loops are quite expensive, require regular maintainance, and come with risks, so perhaps consider soft tubing, or limiting your first loop to cooling just your CPU. As others have said, not the best time to purchaise a new GPU, so if you can wait a little longer do, but if you need a PC now then buy.

Last time I checked a console lasts 5 years minimum.

If you are sick and tired of buying a new one. Then pc would be a terrible alternative.

I've bought maybe 4-6 different pcs and about 10 gpu's in the past 3 years.

Because with pcs you can always buy better parts and upgrades.

With a console it's the same system for the best part of a decade.

So what's the real issue? Also pcs cost a lot more than consoles overall.

You will already have a TV. A decent gaming monitor is expensive and if you go chasing higher res and fps it becomes at pidly expensive. My mate at work spent I think £2500 on his pc. That was for the rig only. His monitor was another £1k on top. Then it's another £250 for his keyboard and mouse.

Sure you can use a £30 keyboard and mouse but it's a slippery slope.

As for watercooling I've been building pcs for 20 years and I've never bothered with it.

It looks great. However it's stupidly expensive and either than being quiet if done right it's a pain to set up and has no great benefit in the scheme of things other than aesthetics.

My cpu and gpu run around 65c whilst gaming. The gpu will start throttling at 80c and it will be in the danger zone around 90-100c.

So makes zero sense for me to do it for temps.

Personally I find upgrading pcs a pain with lots of expensive upgrades hardly being worth the bother. Consoles are far simpler and less hassle.

You mention custom loop yet have specced an aio.

Do you know what a custom loop is and what an aio is?

Both are completely different in terms of money, cooling ability and difficulty in installing.

AIO are a gimmick imo. A decent air cooler will be just as good and a third of the price.

Also a 3900x is completely wasted for gaming. The best gaming cpu is the 3600xt. I'd still recommend the 3600 or even the 3600x over it. Hardly any difference between them.
