So I was looking for a laptop on ebay the last few weeks and thought I found a fairly good deal on a Thinkpaid T150 advertised with a quad core i7, 8gb ram and 240gb ssd. So I picked the laptop up today from my local argos collect+ point and brought it home. Have just checked the laptop and there's no SSD but instead a 240gb cheapo HD and the condition is seriously sub par. It was meant to be refurbished
Just set up a return now taking it down to the collect+ point to return. Have I done the right thing? never using ebay again im ****ed off.

So you bought something that wasn't as advertised and are now returning it?

Yes I think you've done the right thing.

Think we are now averaging an eBay thread every 3 days at the moment.

Must be bad now.

You could use just the fact that there is no SSD present as a sign of item not as described.

As for the condition, here is their quote.

The condition of your computer is professionally refurbished by us. This means there could be some signs of wear however, the machine goes through a stringent quality control system put in place to insure you receive a computer that you are happy with. All computers are in perfect working order, as they were when they left the factory.

What makes the whole thing very cheeky, and why eBay is a waste of ****ing time, is the seller is using stock images to advertise a refurbished model. Now if it was refurbished direct from the manufacturer where it might actually have a new chassis/screen etc, then you could argue stock images are fine to use. But if all this company has done is basically reinstalled the O/S and sold on, they should not be using stock images.

Defo take it back and get your refund.

Nothing wrong with ebay, and you'll get the money back.

Refurbished by ourself means nothing at all. And no pictures of item, you should be more careful when buying second hand goods.
Out if almost 500 transactions only had a couple which have been poor and all but one of them were resolved.
Had more issues with sky contracts than ebay.

We once bought a 'refurbished' iphone 4 from an ebay seller via Argos, and it looked like it had been shaken around in a bag of glass it was in a right state. We got our money back though and were able to return it via Argos so it didn't put me off.

I am more distrustful of ebay than in the past as a seller but as a buyer i use them often and though i dont have full confidence in everything there, i chalk it down to sellers rather than the site. Ebay wouldn't be anywhere near as popular if there were far stricter with its usage, it would also cost a lot more money to moderate. Maybe if standards have relaxed it is due to the sale of PayPal to a separate entity.

I hope you get your money back, as you should, i have been burned by ebay sellers before but paypal have always been very good to buyers (terrible to sellers) from my experiences.

Blaming Ebay for this transaction would be like blaming OCuk forums after following a posters bad advice on a PC upgrade.

Even if your item is as they described (which it isnt) and in pristine condition, you still have the right to return the item.

Echo the sentiments above. You're covered by the not as described clause, so you stand to lose nothing, except a bit of time.

Yeah i know I will get my money back, well I know now not to buy refurbished, partly my own fault too.

Refurbished is fine, but use a company that grades their refurbished items so you actually know what condition you can expect to receive it in.

We tend to only buy refurbished laptops now as there's a good saving to be had on grade 1 models. We've never buy from Ebay though, and I personally wouldn't do so for anything of value.

I understand some will be fine, but this has put me off. Will pay out for a new one.

Refurbished is fine, but you need to read description.
Refurbished by ourself who are totally unknown, could mean anything. Especially when they don't post pictures.

You have factory refurbished sold by factory outlets and graded will be absolutely fine.

Then you have middle of the line refurbished by some unknown small company, but grade them and post pictures of actual item. These are usually fine as well.

Ebay is very much about reading the advert and also reading what's not in the advert,
