Neverwinter Nights 2 Official Thread

PATCH JUST RELEASED

Obsidian have released the v1.03 patch (final) for the recently lauched Neverwinter Nights 2, making it the 3rd patch since launch. To update, simply run the game from your Start menu or Desktop, and click the "Update" option, and you should be on your way! If you are receiving a crash while launching the toolset and while the splash screen says "Creating Default Windows...", check out the third page of this thread. If you installed the 1.03 Beta patch you will need to rollback to version 1.02 before running the autoupdater. You can find the rollback patch at any of the following locations: NWN2 Warcry, NWVault, Obsidian.
Weapon combos in hotbar: Added the ability to set up dual weapon, weapon & shield, or weapon & torch combos in the hotbar. Clicking the hotbar button for a weapon you already have equipped will unequip it.
Camera Changes: We've made a series of camera changes to this version:
- New options for adjusting sensitivity for controlling the camera by keyboard, mouse, and edge of screen.
- Chase Cam adjusted to work more like NWN1.
- In free cam mode, the arrow keys now pan the camera, and holding down CTRL will zoom and yaw the camera.
- Added bindable keyboard key for mouse look / camera control. This mimics functionality of pressing down the middle mouse button for those without a middle mouse button.
Graphics Optimizations: A number of new graphics optimizations have been added:
- Anti-Aliasing Support: Anti-aliasing is now supported and can be enabled in the Options Menu. Please note: This could significantly affect frame rate, depending on your hardware.
- Shadow Rendering: Shadow rendering speed has been improved.
- Tree Rendering: Speed improvements to the rendering of trees.
- Water Rendering: Speed improvements to how water is rendered by the engine.
New Options:
- Buy/Sell Confirmation: You can now turn off the buy/sell confirmation dialog.
- Options menu has been reorganized to support many new camera control options.
- You can now change keybindings in game.
Database Support:
- The database script functions from NWN1 have been re-enabled. They are now significantly faster in many cases.
In related news, Neverwinter Nights Vault has some screenshots of upcoming campaigns, as well as more news from new modules coming up.

*sigh*

I'm really enjoying this game but it's just not cricket... I have it at the hardest difficulty setting and it's still not exactly hard. The gameworld feels soooo small and constrained compared to the free-roaming glory that was Baldurs gate I (and II to a lesser extent). Hardly anything to explore... can't go searching random peoples houses... seems "on rails" for the most part. Very dissappointing in that respect. :(

Also, I HATE the cheesy american accents in the game, they have no place in a fantasy RPG.

Bioware do this in all their games. Jade Empire was the worst, the female sidekick you started off with sounded like a spoilt american teenager. I kept expecting her to finish her sentences with 'like, whatever!'

They ought to get some european actors and have them speaking in an old way but understandble to everyone.

Like some in this link

Medieval phrases still used today

They also ought to employ people with more than two brain cells to write dialogue. I want to scream every time I read a conversation option saying "I could care less". Stupid Americans!!

Sorry to say I've given up on this game. Have been playing in co-op with the missus and, frankly, it's a total mess. The gameworld is so absurdly un-engaging and constrained - it's broken into chunks which totally destroys the feeling of scale. And within those chunks there's no interaction - you can't go into buildings (unless it's part of the plot) and there are invisible walls all over the place. I never once felt like I was part of the world at all.....just felt like I was constantly loading in random chunks of scenery that had no connection to each other. The camera is just plain annoying and the voice acting is poor.

Worst, there is no thought to co-op play at all. When one person is talking the other person can't do a single thing - just have to stand there and read the tedious dialog. Absurd.

And don't even get me started on the performance of the game engine...

A very poor attempt that, for me, doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as NWN1 or the BG series.

Got to the meeting with Black Garius and the game constantly crashes when the spells go off, always at the same point. Checking the NWN2 support forums seems like I'm not the only one. Will probably have to try the game at it's lowest graphics settings to see if it'll run properly. :(

I dl it last night and just started to play however just after i had 1 the competition and was lvl up the game froze my whole computer so ill have to redo the whole thing again, proberly add some thief skills to my bard this time so i dont need that young whipper snapper ;)

Or you could stick to playing games produced and written solely by Europeans if you find the dialogue to be so reprehensible. There are some out there and speaking of polished European "masterpieces", take Gothic 3 for a spin to gain an appreciation for that "old world" attention to detail, ROFL.

Though I am American, I do agree that some of the voice acting is bad, really bad. The farmer in the opening scene is torrid, there is a guy who sounds to be from Australia somehow stuck there as well and listening to the bears dying monologue in the Glade was hysterical. Have you ever heard such a terrible dying rasp "Elaannnneeee". I could just see the guy laughing his ass off trying to do that. I also like when RPG's use the old english style generally. There are some actors that aren't to bad, including Khelgar, a number of the ghost and demons are well done and Jerro fits well enough sounding somewhat sinister and commanding.

Anyway, they really need to keep at the patches, the last one I think broke some things that weren't broken, especially if you were in the middle of a quest and patched it. I have two that are now broken and I refuse to use "console cheats", so they will just go unfinished until next time. Not brilliant, but an enjoyable story even so.

well the 1.3 patch made performance worse for me on a more powerful machine too!

My old P4 2.6 gig with a gig of ram ran it pretty smoothly in 1024x768

Just bought a new pc, E6400, 2 gigs ram and it crawls along in the same mode! with shadows and water off before anyone asks. So knickers to it. I notice that i can get all 4 baldurs gate games/expansions for a tenner off amazon , so that will do me.

EQ2 runs brilliantly with higher settings so i think the machines ok.

So thats Oblivion and NWN2 a bit of a letdown for me anyway :(

It would be fine if "I could care less" was actually the right phrase to use, when in fact it means the direct opposite of what it's meant as in the game.

It's not an opinion, it's fact.

Not arguing that it is grammatically correct, but it is a pretty small thing to bicker about in a game that has much larger issues facing it. Obviously "I could care less" taken literally certainly doesn't convey exactly what they assuredly intended to, but for some reason that particular phrase has lost the "not" when spoken by most and misleading though it may be, so are a lot of slang phrases from other localities. Sure they should keep things like that out of the game, but with the origin and its primary buying audience being American, people shouldn't be so surprised to see things like that interjected.

There was a LOT of dialogue and a lot of text, and even some typos made it through. Should have been caught but they were apparently rushing to get it out the door. I still have high hopes for it to have strong expansions and am sure they will get it all fixed in later patches. NWN1 wasn't exactly gold when it first released either.

Question is who actually reads all the text, i sure dont i give it a quick scan then click to continue onto the next......if its real important hell thats y u have a quest journal.

Lots of people read the text and enjoy the game... we're not all attention-deficit muppets. :p

^^

I agree- if you don't read the text and enjoy the story they are trying to tell, it's just a convoluted stone paper scissors game with fancy graphics.

All the RPGs I like have decent stories. In fact, for me the main reason BG was better than IWD was that with all the pre scripted characters in BG, it felt you were part of the game, rather than just playing the game. Immersion, a wonderful thing when done correctly!

P.S. Also helped by a pint of ale or a tumbler of red wine :p

I seem to have developed NCS - New Character Syndrome. It happened with the original NWN too.

I'm on my third character now, a dexterity/wisdom based Monk and not one character has finished Act 1! I get into the game with one character, then think "actually, this would be really good", and start again!

Not really i have the ablity to scan a line of text and still get what they are meaning to say without reading word for word, i guess im just superior ;)
