New 1TB HDD Replacement programme.

Our records show that this iMac has a Seagate hard drive, but it's not affected. No further action on your part is needed at this time.
It was worth checking just in case, thanks for the link.

cheers just checked one of my 27" i have just ordered a 3tb for it but appears this is now under warranty ,, than for heads up

last week it started showing under bar at boot up every time so i thought ooops new drive lol

regards

Had mine replaced on this programme at the Cambridge Apple Store. Very easy and quick - they took less than a day to do the replacement. Only bummer is my Seagate was replaced by an Hitachi - was hoping for a Western Digital. But, to be honest the Hitachi drive is a damned site quieter and feels faster - though that could be a placebo. Touch wood all seems good so far.

Billzz,

Did they take an image of your original Seagate and put this on the new disk or is it a fresh install of everything? Did they give you any guarantees that the old disk would be fully destroyed?

I work for an AASP - while the hardware issue is covered by the warranty, software and your data is not.

We'll give you your Mac back with a shiny new hard drive in, but that's it. Our company will move your data across to the new drive but at a cost, otherwise you can obviously do it yourself from your backup with minimal fuss.

I don't know what the policy is at Apple Stores but I presume it's the same in that your data's not covered. I don't think they offer a paid service to move it over.

Thanks for posting this - just checked mine as I've always been annoyed at how noisy it was, and it indeed one that needs a replacement.

Now just the hassle of taking it to an Apple Store!

Apple won't image your drive at all. They will simply put the OS on that your system came with from an image. No service or anything.

Mine needs replacing too, but don't know if I can be bothered to take it in!
The other option, if you contact AppleCare, is to arrange a pickup. They will arrange the service for you with an authorised repair centre, who will then contact you to discuss.

Mine came with Snow Leopard, but have since upgraded to Mountain Lion - will they give me it back with Snow Leopord on again?

My problem is that I use the iMac in Target Display mode so I lose the iMac I lose my PC monitor!

Will see what the wait time is like at my local Apple store.

I'd chat with them, they may be able to stick a new image on there. It'd be a bit ridiculous if they didn't frankly. But standard procedure is to put the old one on...

Yeah I've just had an email too this is going to be a pain carrying my 27" iMac through the city centre to the apple store

Thanks for the response. The reason I was asking is because a consultant at work got the e-mail and he has 2 concerns

1) what happens to the old drive once they swap it out? He will have some patient information on there from his private work, so wants to ensure and have some guarantees that the data will be properly wiped and destroyed

2) How to get his data moved on to the new disk.

Are Apple letting people keep the original disk? Surely they have to provide a data migration service for those people who don't know how to take images etc (probably about 95% of owners lol)

He is under the impression that they will move the data over for him

The drive would be sent back to Apple and erased. If he's concerned he can erase it first.

They won't migrate the data - they've covered the drive but the data isn't covered. It's just a hardware warranty.

Time Machine is the easy answer.

this is my problem..both apple stores are miles away and you have to walk for a fair distance from public car parks carrying a huge 27" computer!

can they not do a pickup and return service..I dont mind being without it for a while as I have a macbook pro as well

Hows everyone taking theirs? I dont have the box no more with it being a 2009. I have to take mine to meadowhall is its the only one around really and its usually heaving!
