New 2.0 TFSI VW out of oil after 4k miles

What? No it's not! There are numerous issues with the M47, its quite common to suffer turbocharger failure and who could ignore the swirl flap debacle?

So really then you mean one specific variant, not the M47 as a whole..

Yeah... thats right. Sorry should have been clearer. It was interesting MG taking off the stuff that failed constantly, and ending up with something rather reliable.

Im actually considering a ZT diesel as a cheap and cheerful run around.

Not quite made up my mind yet though!

I dont think MG took anything off, they just stuck with the first version of the engine that had nothing on it in the first place. Which is why it had no power and wasn't that economical.

Getting back on track, although the manufacturers specify the oil consumption as acceptable up to 1ltr per 800 miles or something ridiculous, this is just an excuse for poor manufacturing on SOME of the engines.

That oil is likely to end up in the cat, and likely to cause an early cat failure.

Ok

So now I am back with more fluid issues.

It ran out of screen wash which is my own fault so thats fine but it has also consumed almost all of the engine coolant, that can't be normal right? I put some more in but is it worth taking in to the dealer?

We have only owned it 1 year and its done 4500 miles now

No it shouldn't use a drop of coolant tbh, I would be taking it back to the dealer for sure.

It shouldnt use any or if any, very very little

Does it overheat, smoke, leak anything like that?

no not at all, oil temp is normally around 98. No white smoke or anything.

I am going away for a couple of weeks so will drop the car into VW for them to take a look at.

cant believe people dont check their oil more often :(

shame on you,

check my fluids/tyre pressures every day on the taxi. have to say the rattly fiat diesel found in the vectra is bleeding brilliant and has never used a drop of oil. even with 200k on the clock :)

I used to check mine once between services and it had never dropped more than 1/10 between max and min. :o

Octavia has developed a taste for oil now though and the Punto burns a bit so I'm having to check them both fortnightly now :(

I'm assuming the car given you a low coolant warning?

assuming you don't have a HGF have you checked the expansion tank?

if thats the tank that holds the coolant yes and it was very close to empty, I put in another 750ml.

I called the local VW dealer today but they said its nothing to worry about so I will try another dealer.

a car dumping all its coolant in 5k miles is something to worry about!

by checking the expansion tank I meant is the cap/seal on correctly? if it is then maybe a cored radiator?

and yeah HGF would have other symptons but could account for the coolant loss :)
