New £200 card

The 8800GTS for the same money as a GX2 - bargain. ;)
Yeh nice and cheap. Only £370 :o

Think I'm sticking with what I have atm. Only 2 games i can't run in 1920x1200 on full settings with over 60fps constant.
FEAR and Tomb Raider Legend with NextGen on.

Such good value, I'm thinking of putting one in the next PC I build for my mum. She only uses it for e-mails, but what the hell, at that price, why not! ;)
You would be much better with onboard graphics, or perhaps something like an FX5200.

:D :p

Oh, you mean the firewood?
I found my one worked better as a firestarter, it was a passively cooled beast mind.....
They don't burn for long though.

Hi everyone,

i have the same budget as Danz (200q) so i thought i could use this thread. After doing some reading ive narrowed my choice to gf7900gto, or ati 1900xt 512mb (the one from overclockers.co.uk clearance section). Ive seen that the ati card wins in most of the game benchmarks (it loses in 3dmark tho?) but ive also read that you cant really overclock it, which is easily done with GF. Some people also complain about the noise of the Ati fan. A few weeks ago i bought the 20.1 viewsonic widescreen monitor and would like to be able to play games in the native (1680x1050) resolution.

So taking into account the fact that nvidia can be ocd (and would be ;) ), is 20 quid cheaper and runs silent, which one would you advise to buy?

Personally im leaning towards nVidia - had 3 cards from them and everyone had been great. Had a radeon 9800pro from ati - it died on me after 3 months and the replacement process was hell.

P.S Unless you want to send me the extra L300 please dont reply "its pointless to buy a dx9 card, new gen is coming out next week!". I have a limited (student) budget, all my games run on dx9, so before dx10 actually comes out ill be most probably buying a new pc and a new card.

Please don't ask this question on these boards - Easyrider and Ulfhedjinn will be along shortly to wave handbags if you do :D

Both are stonking cards. Go with which you personally prefer. Otherwise it's gonna be a long night :o

Tute

in your previous posts here you wrote to definetly get the 1900xt 512. Any special reasons? And do you know is it faster than a reasonably ocd 7900gto?

If you can stretch to an X1900XT 512MB i'd go for one of those.

Otherwise it's down to the 7900GTO @ GTX speeds OR X1900XT 256MB.

Please DON'T ask which one of those two is the best :D

Just go for what you prefer, the performance is pretty much identical, probably too close for many to notice.

7900gto is the faster card.

The reason I prefer the X1900 is that i've had far better experiences in the past with ATi cards. That's it really.

I don't run with HDR+AA so I wouldn't see any advantage to that, and I don't look close enough to see the image quality differences.

Just go with whichever make you prefer.

Edit: Just noticed you're comparing the X1900 512 to the 7900GTO (not the 256).

In which case it's X1900 all the way, it's a fair bit faster.

Ehh, i was nearly decided to go with the gf7900gto card with everyone saying they are comparable etc. etc. And now its all back to beginning.

So once again, a question to all the experts here -
which card would you recommend:
GF7900GTO or x1900xt 512mb

but not only performance-wise but taking into account all the stuff like available drivers, noise, heat, reliability etc.

The 7900GTO 512MB and X1900XT 256MB are comparable.

The X1900XT 512MB at £205 is a steal. ;)

The X1900 will be louder, but it's not as loud as certain people would fool you into believing, and they do run hot but are rated to handle up to 110ºC or something silly. They are also very reliable and as a bonus they have superior image quality and the ability to do FP16 HDR and antialiasing at the same time (again, certain people would fool you into believing otherwise, but it's very playable.)

If noise and heat are a premium issue though, buy the 7900GTO. It's clearly superior in this area.
