New 2010 iPhone Rumours

i still think it will be an engineering sample put together in a quick half-a-job case to get the prototype working.

Im thinking (and hoping) the final production model that goes to retail is a lot sleeker.

I'd like to see the metal backing of the original iPhone return if possible. The plasticky 3G feels shonky build quality in the hand compared to the original slice of granite.

This.

I reckon it is genuinely from Apple, due to the iPad photo.

But I do not think it is the finished product - well I hope not as the design isn't as nice IMHO. New hardware in a random case is my bet.

So apples newest up coming iPhone will look totally identical to a poor Japanese copy of the previous generation iPhone? I don't think so

The story sounds like something out of a novel — someone “finds” a next-gen iPhone housed in a 3G case on the floor of a bar in San Jose, and, while the phone was at first operational, alas, the unit now no longer boots. Those in possession of the unit send pictures to the editors at Engadget, who posted them last night. I was highly skeptical, to say the least. But: intrigued.

Today, Engadget has doubled down and called it legit, offering as proof this blurry photo they obtained back in January, which if you squint right appears to show this very device next to a test unit iPad. This photo isn’t conclusive, clearly, but I believe Engadget’s confidence in the legitimacy of this unit is based partly on factors they can’t publish.

So I called around, and I now believe this is an actual unit from Apple — a unit Apple is very interested in getting back. I am not certain that this looks like the actual production unit Apple intends to ship to consumers. I think it’s a testbed frame — thicker, with visible (un-Apple-like) seams, meant to fit in 3GS cases so as to disguise units out in the wild. It’s hard to tell from the photos. But I think it is the real deal in terms of the internals and display being next-gen iPhone hardware, and the new glass back. Put another way: the front looks legit, the back looks legit, but the sides I’m not sure about. A front-facing camera and 960 × 640 display are two things I believe are slated for the next iPhone. (The “80 GB” of storage sounds like a mistake to me, but who knows? SSD storage typically comes only in even power-of-two increments.)

The most-cited counter-evidence is this photo, originally posted by Applesfera, which is purportedly of a counterfeit iPhone purchased in Japan, with the same style volume buttons and mute switch. **Update: But now Applesfera claims that their reader who submitted the image admits it was a fake.

The whole story is a bit fishy, to say the least. But, to reiterate, I believe Engadget’s photos do show a pre-production or testbed Apple iPhone unit. The fishy parts are where it came from, who leaked the photos and sold the unit, and who did they sell it to?

Makes sense that it could be some kind of test device, for the new features, rather than the final form factor.

I don't think Apple would allow prototypes off campus. I also doubt even their prototype devices would look that poor...

It could be a test device but I wouldn't put money on it.

Well, we told you so. The fourth-generation iPhone prototype that leaked its way out into the world over the weekend has found its way to Gizmodo, and they've examined it exhaustively, removing any doubt that it's real. Not only does it show up in iTunes, Xcode, and System Profiler, but it has different product identifiers than the 3G or 3GS, and it's packed with Apple-labeled components inside. Unfortunately, they couldn't get it to boot out of recovery mode, but a number of new features and changes are evident just by holding it. Obviously, it's thinner than the 3GS, with smaller internal components and a larger battery inside the metal frame. There's also a front-facing camera, a larger and better camera with a flash on the back, a higher-res display that's slightly smaller than the current models, a second mic for noise cancellation, and that new back, which we've heard is glass or ceramic but Giz apparently thinks is plastic. It's also three grams heavier than a 3GS, with a 16 percent larger battery and the same new MicroSIM slot used in the iPad.

We're also told the phone was found running iPhone OS 4.0 but that it was remotely killed before Giz could actually see it, and that they can't get it to boot because it requires a bespoke build of the OS. We're assuming Apple's hot on the trail of this thing, so hit the source link while you can and check a couple more pics after the break.

Thought it might be better all info in here Feek, Justin?

Make of this what you will.

I'm still sceptical about this being the 4g, and the manner it was 'found'.

Maybe Apple is trying out Viral marketing.

Also MacRumors summarises the Gizmodo post:

Over the weekend, the Apple web was abuzz after Engadget offered images of what appeared to be a possible next-generation iPhone that had reportedly been lost in a bar in the general vicinity of Apple's headquarters. Further evidence of their authenticity then surfaced when it was noticed that a similar device appeared in a legitimate leaked iPad photo just before its January introduction.

And today, Gizmodo drops the biggest bombshell: They got their hands on the device and have examined it and torn it apart for all to see.
What's new
- Front-facing video chat camera
- Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
- Camera flash
- Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
- Improved display. It's unclear if it's the 960x460 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the "Connect to iTunes" screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
- What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
- Split buttons for volume
- Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

Other changes observed in the device compared to the current iPhone include a glass or shiny plastic back, 16% larger battery, and a slightly smaller but apparently higher resolution screen.

It has a higher res screen, front facing camera and rear flash and was running 4.0

Why would a Chinese "copy" be like that? Link to it for sale over there? I don't think so
