Good Evening Everybody,

I have just been trolling the internet and noticed how out of touch I have been with PC Hardware so I have decided to re-acquaint myself.
I have started to notice this move into 'Socket 2011' for processors and motherboards. My question is will the whole market completely move into this socket, in which case should I upgrade my system? or is it the case that they will continue to dabble between 1155 / 2011 for a long time yet?

Any help or experience would be very helpful Cheers.

Haswell is due shortly on a new socket i believe 1150, socket 2011 will be around for a bit as it supports the ive-e cpu's which i think are due Q3 2013

I'm fairly sure 2011 is very high end, multiple processor stuff. The other socket is more likely to be what you want. Intel will probably obsolete both within a couple of years

Doubtful when Ivy - E is meant to be coming out on 2011 in a years / 2 years time. Thats like suggesting not to go for Ivybridge because Haswell is coming. Ivybridge is still a very good chipest.

I think my x58 kit is three years old now - very hard to find replacement parts at low cost. Ivybridge won't abruptly stop working in two years time, but Intel are likely to have stopped making new parts for it. Obsolete wasn't a good word to go with

See Im running the i3 processor on the 1155, and I really want to step it up a gear to the i7 for this year.
I was just curious because I know it would be a lot of money to go for a processor and motherboard upgrade as opposed to sticking with the 1155 and just a cpu.

Would the best option be to wait and see what happens or..?

You can still get the i7 3770K, i7 2700K or i7 2600k.. These are all 1155 CPU's..

The 2011 Socket is the 'i7 Enthusiast' Range.. Thats why there Called: Sandybridge-E.

The 3820 offers very little over the 3770k anyway.. So unless you want to spend £450 on just a CPU 1155 is the best place to be and stay.
