Hi all,

Friend of mine is wanting to build a PC to play BF3, Skyrim and whatever the next 2 - 3 years has in store. Hopefully.

Current thinking is along these lines:

Some thoughts though:

1. It's more than we were hoping to spend! Can you see any sensible ways to save a few quid?

2. The gfx card may only be a temp solution for a few months till kepler, when the 460 would get sold

3. Is the pre-OCd bundle really the way to? Given the 8gb ram upgrade means we would have to reflash the bios and whatnot, it seems like a rip off. Surely better off getting stock stuff, saving some money and just starting from scratch with the OCing (if desired)

4. Not too sure on PSU choice really

5. Have i forgotten anything? (dont need win license)

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks again

Overclocking Sandybridge is very doable yourself so see if those components are cheaper split up rather than the bundle, as you have said.

Really need 128gb SSD? only other way to save some cash everything else is basics.

have that screen and graphics card you can overclock the 460 very well to get a bit more out of it too.

you can't price out that bundle IMO it's stupidly good value for money. The mobo and chip should cost that much alone.

don't think you can price that down much at all tbh

only saver is smaller SSD

Thanks all.

That case looks pretty nice, thanks for the tip.

Not sure on the 64gb to be honest, i have the M4 64gb in my own computer, not sure if i shouldn't have gone larger.

As per my first post, prepared to spend more on a gfx card, circa £200, but it just doesn't seem like now is the right time to buy. So the 460 is a temporary solution with plans to sell it on in a few months.

So, without the OC bundle, and the odd change or two, it comes out like this:

Saves a few quid.

1. Is the PSU enough long term? i.e. for next gen graphics cards?
2. Is that ram going to be ok?

Thanks again!

A 460 won't pack much punch if you're going to be whacking up settings at decent resolutions...

I have the builder 600w in my pc and I wouldn't recommend it - Google 'cx builder buzz' or 'cx builder whine' they make annoying noise :(

Edit: You may want LP ram as the 'sinks on vengeance are a pain.

Surely if you buy a overclocked bundle with 8 gig of ram ocuk should send it out up and running. Contact them and see what they say.

On saving some money, small ssd as already mentioned and do you really need 8 gig of ram. (not up on the newer games, but maybe 4 gig will do)

You could drop down to a smaller ssd for now and pop the OS and a couple of games on it for the time being. When more flush, you could team it up with a mechanical drive at a later date and have the best of both worlds for OS speed/capacity.

Assuming you already have win764 premium or higher;

Either the gtx460 or the 6850 would suffice for the time being at standard settings running 1080 res. The 6850 pulls less juice though, and helps reduce the leccy bill.

Oh, and the MSI board is a solid little runner, but its no good for crossfire or extreme overclocking. At best, you can expect anything from 4.2 to 4.6 out of the 2500k on this board.

Thanks again everyone.

Removing the 2500k was an accident. Woops!

Good point on the low profile ram and the alternative coolers. Thanks.

Cheers for the heads up on the PSU. I have a corsair vx450 which I've been very happy with but will try something else

Again on the graphics, I'm not expecting much from the 460. It is a temporary solution which hopefully wont lose much more than 25% of its value in the next few months. As wolf says, it will "suffice"

On the OCd bundle, they specifically say you have to update the bios yourself. Very odd.

Is a 550w power supply really enough? It might be ok for this setup as it stands but will it stand up for the next few years if upgrade are made, to the gfx card in particular? I've put in a higher wattage one. Thoughts appreciated.

looks good and sorry i misread earlier about the price of the bundle else i would have said.

You have to update the bios yourself, if you add any ram after they send the bundle. If you choose the 8gig in the options, then they will set it up with that. Adding ram and using all 4 ram slots later will need the adjustments.

Ah yes.

Good point. I should learn how to read a bit better!

So it sounds like we are just about there then.

Just need to decide if we should go pre OCd or not. I'm not sure.
