New 295x2 and PSU problems

Hey everyone :)

I recently bought a new 295x2 and EVGA Supernova 1300w psu. The fitting went fine and i installed the drivers straight from the disk. While using it it seemed to be performing a lot slower than it should be, getting about 40-50fps in watch dogs on ultra at 1080p, as well as strange visual glitches in game, however the card didnt seem to get hot at all and barely reached 55 degrees.

After a few hours of use i restarted the pc and was greeted with very bad flickering a lagging on startup that seemed to get worse over time. Ive checked all cables and everything is secured and im definatley sure the PSU can handle the card. I was leaning more towards a driver issue but wanted to see what you guys think first?

Thanks!

Hello & Welcome to the Forum!

Firstly, Watchdogs is a dog of a game. Badly optimised and runs like crap on most machines, so nothing unexpected really.

It would always be advisable to use the most recent AMD drivers to ensure you get the most from your card, the 14.6 Beta drivers are available HERE. If you don't want the beta, the WHQL drivers are HERE.

+1 on the other comments
The PSU should defently run this cards! Can you also post the components of your rig, will help if troubleshooting is needed....
Did you already monitor usage of CPU, GPU and RAM?
Did you already run some benchmarks like the heaven or valley one if they will run?

you cannot evaluate a graphic card according to watch dogs, that game is really badly optimised for any card nvidia or amd, not sure if the crossfire/sli profiles are even on, even if it was scalling would be crp, and wouldn't help your fps drop to 40 while driving with the stutter.

I installed the 14.4 drivers straight from the AMD site the first time, but it crashed out during installation and just froze. I made sure they were all removed and tried the disk installation that came with the card, which worked fine.

The rest of my rig is:
Intel Intel Core i7 4770K
Gigabyte GA-G1.Sniper Z97
8GB Vengeance 1600
120GB Samsung SSD
H100i CPU Cooler

All parts are basically new, I got them about a month ago apart from the ram which is about a year old now.

I ran Heaven benchmark for about 30 mins at max, getting around 70-100fps depending on scene, this was before it started with the problems.

To me the frames could be a little more in heaven, have you overclocked your CPU?
Maybe you can compare your frames in the Heaven Thread with other people using the same GPU if the FPS are ok. But like the others said, Watch Dogs is a bad benchmark to see if the card is working and performing right. As long as other games/benchmarks do run correctly I would not worry too much

Nothing overclocked for now. Im not too worried with the performance as its something ill look at when the pc is working, i'd just like to get it fixed as its completely unusable right now, im thinking to just format it and start fresh and see if that sorts it.

check what speed your card is running at in the bios.
im talking about PCI Express bus speed.

if its running on auto change it to 2.0 or 3.0, test 2.0 first as its the most compatible.
then check card speeds.

Why have you bought a 295x2 for 1080p???

Anyhoo. Im having similat issue but at 4k. No games play. It just reboots my PC

The 295x2 needs 2x 8 pin connectors to deliver 28a each, and a combine current of 50a

Ive got a Tagan 1300w PSU, and Im wondering if its up to the job also.

The 295x2 needs to have very specific PSUs to run properly

If anyone can make sense out of this, Id be greatful, but Im guessing it doesnt have enough per rail to power the card adequately.

My PSU specs and the OP PSU specs are below

A recommended PSU from AMD for the 292x2 below

I think The OP is OK with his, but I fear mine is lacking

Can anyone make sense out of it as Im a little out my depth

Ok ive formatted the pc and installed all drivers with no issue. I ran heaven at max and was getting around 80-120fps and 66 degrees, so pretty similar to before. This still seems kinda low

Its running at 3.0

ok change that option back to auto then if that does not work change it to 2.0 and test and report back.
if one of the other 2 options works, then go into your bios and change the system agent voltage and bump it up a few notches to stabilize your pci express power.

All done, still performes best on 3.0

take some screenshots with afterburner and gpu-z running, someone might be able to point at the problem easier

also see if you can overclock any without problems, if you have something faulty its better to return it sooner than later

Good shout Mei. OP setup some overlays and take some screenshots with Unigine running with the overlay present so we can have a butchers. Take a look at this thread for how to setup an overlay and what information to have running on it.

OK i set everything up like you said, one thing is there was no crossfire option in CCC.

Ended up with this after heaven, i watched the overlay and both gpu's usage was going between 85-100% with temps reaching 64ish degrees on both chips and afterburner shows the same, also the crossfire image in the top right was there.

low temps here because i had just started running it.
