Nvidia drivers fully purged. 980Ti removed, 3080 installed and latest drivers clean installed. All games and stress tests are working well, but as soon as I load a Witcher 3 save and enter the 3D world, PC fully shuts down and reboots.

PSU is a Seasonic Focus+ Gold 750W and is about 4 years old. Rest of rig is in sig.

Anyone had this before?

Tricky one. Put your ICT Technician hat on and work through it. My early guess is your PSU, but I'd begin by testing the RAM. Also maybe worth verifying the game files.

Everyone says PSU when I've been googling this, but I'm seeing Vray and Furmark consistently pull 100% power and usage with good temps and clocks. Nothing else has restarted the PC but TW3 and it happens 100% of the time within 1s of loading a save and entering the 3D game. Checking memtest now.

Tw3 using the CPU more ? You have overclock try it at stock ? Also each strand of pcie cable coming directly from PSU ?

Have you tried stressing the CPU at the same times as Vray or Furmak?
Cinebench at the same time, or even just 7zip in it's benchmark thing?
Just in case the PSU only brings down the PC when both CPU and GPU are stressed.

Might be that TW3 somehow triggers some bursty spikes on the GPU, while Furmark does not. Furmark is commonly throttled by the drivers anyhow.

Yeah I've dropped my oc right down and it's still rebooting the pc. Same cpu OC that was alongside the 980ti

Will try stressing cpu and gpu simultaneously.

I've also tried multiple saves and they were all working fine yesterday.

I wonder if this is why I'm reading a lot of people undervolting their gpu? Is that a bios tweak or something done via the likes of precisionx?

Most people undervolt as you can save decent power and in turn heat for minimum performance lost. Infact learn your card well enough and you can usually undervolt while increasing clock speed vs stock.

Yes precisionX should be able to do it. MSI AB is what I use, guides around on the internet, set up something like 850mv and 1800 Mhz or so and see how your get on.

Can try the undervolt route first I suppose, see how it behaves with the game. Still odd its just witcher 3, but maby the spikes are significant there and causing mayhem while okay in other GPU loads.

I assume going off seasonic wattage calculatorband 850 being their recommendation, I have little to no chance of an rma/warranty claim with seasonic?

Most likely. Just wondering if a tweak can be made temporarily to confirm the psu is at fault.

The other way to reduce the power load on the gpu when playing Witcher 3 is to go into the Nvidia control panel before you start playing and cap the fps at 60. If it still crashes you could go into the bios and disable the xmp on the system memory, but I doubt its that if other games work ok

Yeah I thought about that too but the memory test is still going so it'll be tomorrow now before I can try other things.

I've even deleted and recreated the user settings files incase there were any weird settings left over.

Is there any best practice for the connectors on the psu? I have three connectors going to the ones labelled cpu/pcie, with two going to the gpu obviously. Like does it matter if cpu is on top row and both gpu are on the bottom?

It's worth checking the file system. Open a command prompt as administrator and run sfc /scannow. 750W should be okay with a 3080.

Do you get the same result if you start a new game?

Your PSU is toast bro, need a new more powerful one.

alternatively and also as a confirmation, put a strong undervolt on the card to reduce its power consumption down to 980ti level and see if your system reboots, I bet it won't
