New 3080 Installed. Yay! TW3 Restarting PC. Not yay

From the PSU tier lists found online:

'Older Seasonic Focus revisions (Focus Gold, Focus Plus Gold, Focus Plus Platinum; made before 2018) had transient sensitivity issues. Some new SKUs are not affected because they were released later (Seasonic Focus GM/GX/PX refreshes, Phanteks AMP, NZXT C/E etc.). Although situation with Ampere GPUs is unclear it’s assumed that there are no widespread issues.'

If yours is 4 years old it could well be affected?

Personally I am running a 750W Phanteks AMP which is based on newer revision Seasonic with the 3080FE (max it can pull outside spikes is about 358W) and it seems okay thus far.

I ran my 3770k @ 4.5GHz setup with a 3080 TUF OC. It had a few extras -
  • 2 HDs
  • 3 SSDs
  • Blu-ray
  • Oculus Rift + 3 sensors
  • 2 additional USB cards(1 requiring a SATA/MOLEX power connection)
  • USB mouse
  • Corsair keyboard with LEDs
  • Coolernaster Controlpad with LEDs
  • headphones
  • external USB HDs
  • label printer
  • TV tuner
  • XBox controller
  • Steam controller
  • Bitfenix Recon
  • NH-D14
  • 2 Noctual 140mm, 1 120, 2 80 fans
  • several barcode scanners/chargers, some using USB power only.
  • 10 year old XFX (Seasonic) 80 plus gold 750W PSU
No issues at all with it, hence my reluctance to upgrade until recently.

This is my point, that 750w is enough. I'm running 8700K at 4.8 with 3 SSDs, an M.2 SSD and no extra peripherals. 750w "is not enough" doesn't cut it, sorry. If it was garbage quality, perhaps, but this issue I'm having is not simply because there's not enough juice. I can run a multitude of stress test tools at once, pulling 100% GPU/CPU power together and not have a single issue. There's something about these random spikes in games and it seems there's lots of evidence (not proof) of this particular model having this issue.

If they RMAit great, if not I'll buy an 850w. As others have said, having that extra headroom is not going to harm anything, but it shouldn't be necessary either...

Looking forward not sure how future proof 850w will be  with leaks how much power future cards are expected to use

I myself have 1000w hx platinum Corsair which I've had for around 5 years got me through few builds

Might be looking to get the 4080 so hoping can continue to use it

Nvidia drivers fully purged. 980Ti removed, 3080 installed and latest drivers clean installed. All games and stress tests are working well, but as soon as I load a Witcher 3 save and enter the 3D world, PC fully shuts down and reboots.

PSU is a Seasonic Focus+ Gold 750W and is about 4 years old. Rest of rig is in sig.

Anyone had this before?

According to this the pre 2018 seasonic focus does have issues with transient spikes causing it to trip.

Yup that's what I'm believing to be at 'fault'. I'll be the first to admit when I'm wrong, but surely in the most basic sense 750W is 'enough'. I bought this PSU on Jan 7th 2018 meaning that (depending on how long it sat on OCUK shelves etc) it was probably manufactured mid-late 2017, so definitely in scope of this issue.

This is why they have developed the new ATX 3 psu standard, to cope better with spikes than the current standard.
ASUS was warning about power supply issues when Ampere was launched, Asus says its ROG Strix RTX 3080 might require a new power supply (pcworld.com)

OP If the issue is only with one game I would personally just use the in game 60 fps cap setting and enjoy it trouble free rather than buy a 850w current standard psu. Then when the new standard comes out consider a new psu. After all by running at max fps gamers are wearing out their psu as noted by ASUS above. While reducing the power load by undervolting points to a psu issue its only happening in one game. There could be an underlying software or other conflict. I can easily make The Witcher 3 crash every time on load by running a certain application

Perhaps by running the 980ti on a single cable in the past you have run the psu hard and it is now struggling with spikes.

As the article above also highlights it might not be the psu at fault but the power supply via the motherboard

Buy at least 1000W for your next PSU as next gen GPUs are looking horrendous.

That's interesting hoping I can get away with current PSU for the next gen if not will look at ATX 3

750w is enough as I've been running a 3080 with an evga 750w for over 18 months now with no issues but it seems the trip activation on certain older models is a bit more sensitive and this can happen on even higher wattage units which in theory should have no issues in running a 3080.

Nothing to do with maximum voltage and more with spikes.
New PSUs aiming to 3 times the GPU’s maximum voltage as theoretical maximum spike for few milliseconds. A 600W GPU spiking to 1800W won’t necessarily require a 1800W PSU.
PSU manufacturer’s biffing up the PSU’s internals to accommodate such spikes.
Allied to new CPUs yes, a 1000W PSU will be bare minimum, but voltage alone is like recommend a car with four doors.

I have a similar problem with PUBG. It's the only game that crashes but if I switch to a dirt cheap motherboard, I have found my 5900x draws about 100W less power under load and it's perfectly stable.

Either the motherboard is faulty or the extra power is tripping my Seasonic GX850 up.

This is what I'm trying to say, but I don't have enough experience to have a solid case. Simply, "750W is not enough" is not the case IMO, it's more complicated than that. If it wasn't, then no one would be able to safely be able to run an RTX3080 or higher on a 750W card and it would be listed as the minimum recommended.

Anyways, Seasonic have approved my RMA with the intention to replace with a newer model.

When you returned your PSU to Seasonic, gets returned to Holistics Logistics at Wolverton, how long did it take for them to show it was received after it was delivered, on the tracking link that they sent to you...?
My 750w PSU was signed for by their 3rd party warehouse today but as yet still shows as not being received by Seasonic.

Thanks

I'll let you know. I've not been long in from work, so I've only just completed the RMA form and submitted it. Feel free to PM me to chase me up, as I'll probably forget knowing me...

I had something similer long time ago with Shadowman. In the end it was the AGP chipset drivers for my Voodoo 3 2000 graphics card, I got updated ones from Gigabytes website and it fixed the issue.

Ah fair enough, you haven't returned yours yet. Mine has been returned, RMA approved, and I'm now waiting for a replacement.

Hopefully these will be avoided....

Yup, I've a few of those too.

My NEW replacement 750w PSU has been shipped, from Germany. It has been sent by FedEx, should arrive next Tuesday.

Good luck with your return.
