It is nice to see the sizes increasing yet again, nice drive to use as a main storage drive.

Indeed! But the possibility of a boot drive too is just fantastic! At 750gb per platter these things are insanely fast destroying just about every 7200rpm drive out there. A very special drive indeed

They are that fast they are practically snapping at Raptors for performance but without the noise or heat issues and several times the capacity.

Just a small update of why the cost is a little higher than you may have though...

A controller card will be bundled with the drive that allows for the drive to be recognised as 3TB and also so that it can be used as a bootable unit for those with the compatable OS.
Western Digital have gone all out with this drive setting the standards before the competition. I for one am certainly impressed !

Am i right in thinking then if used as a storage drive EG films you can install as normal without the adapter and if so will they do a kind of OEM kit just the drive without the cost?

The card will always be a requirement from what I can see. I believe this is needed to break the 2.19tb limit.

Well that is pretty fast then isn't it. I wonder if they will release a sata 6gb version and watch that fly. Also with the controller card to show the drive as 3tb, is this an onboard controller limitation where it will show less.

For that to compete with 2tb drives it would have to be a lot lower price...

I mean u can have 2x2 tb drives for around 150 pounds or a 3tb one for 190 i know which one i would buy tbh

I remember buying a 1GB WD caviar drive in 1995

for £200. I've still got it and it still works as of the last time I tried it 4 months or so ago.

Yes, since Drobo uses neither a BIOS nor MBR, which are the two showstoppers. I'm fairly sure that Drobo does use Linux however, so they will need a Linux kernel that plays nice with the 2.19TB 'limit' (not all do). That's probably what the update will do.

If only they were a quarter of the price, I have a Drobo V2 with 4x1TB F1's giving me 2.7TB of raided storage. Unfortunately my little black box of love is nearing its limit, only 400GB left.

I calculate if I slapped in 4 of these it'll give me 8.5TB of storage from 12TB of total.

That'd be amazing, shame I can't afford them though. Struggling to save for 4x2TB WD Greens! :eek:

There's quite a lot of Drobo love here on OcUK :cool:

Once they've done a firmware update I'll be sticking a few 3TB Greens in a DroboFS. Don't want to think about the cost though :eek:
