Am looking to buy an Hdtv - min size 40''

I would like it to be reasonably future proof - and needs to be compatible with sky hd

really not sure what to go for any advice would be great

cheers

Duncan

Sony Bravia either the W or the X versions. Might push your budget up to 2000. But easily worth every penny.

You can get a V version for 1500 but they only do 720p where as the W and X do 1080p

If you have the money. Bravias are by far the best tellys on the market atm

I have seen:

TOSHIBA 47" HD Ready FREEVIEW Digital LCD TV

Picture:

· 119cm Visible Screen Size / 16:9 Screen Format / 1920 X 1080 Pixel
Resolution / High Definition Ready
· 800:1 Contrast Ratio / 550cd/m2 Brightness / 3D Digital Comb Filter /
Active Vision LCD
· Progressive Scan / DNR / Selectable Picture Format / Auto Format (WSS)
· Interactive Features:
· Fastext / Text Page Memory / Digital Text / EPG

for £1700, is it worth going for this or for one of the bravia's?

Bravias, definately. The SD and HD picture quality of the V/W/X series is quite a bit better.

The Toshiba panel may be 1920x1080, but it's not 1080p. Not that that matters "too" much.

You can get the 40W2000 online for an unbelievable £1469.99 at the moment..

Iv been on the lookout for a 46" so have been reading around abit, but for a 40" I would deffo recommend the sony W series, don't think iv read a bad thing about it.

I recommend Sony BRAVIA 3LCD SXRD. I dont recommend one of the Sony LCD tvs as the screen kept on trailing and slowing down. But not sure what model it was.
SXRD have amaing pciture quality, if u check avforum people would recommend it. I have the 50inch sony bravia kdfe50a12 which i got a year and ahalf ago and love it to pieces. Mine has only 1 HDMI input whereas the newer SXRD version of my tv has 2. The conrast ratio is much higher too. You wont be able to get a 1080P for 1500, they costaround 2500+, 720p i the next best after that. Check out avforums.

I would strongly advice you to look at the new Pioneer range of plasma HDTV's.

You can get the 4270XD for £1429 if you shop around.

Id check your facts before posting - a quick google showed:

Sony Bravia 40" LCD-TV KDL-40W2000 - £1600
which includes 1080p
2*HDMI
1* Componant

The newer Bravia's have a second componant in addition to the above and I believe a better LCD but come in around £2000

There are also different variety's of hdmi available now, not always described the same way - the newer variety will always be backwards compatable with any source you have (dvd player, pc or amp etc) but if I were you I would try and get your tv with the most uptodate version

Type B is backwards compatable with Dual link DVI where as Type A is not (unfortunately all info I have seen points to latest Sony's having type A - although this was only a quick search

Type B also known as HDMI 1.3

I believe there may be other differences also but you can real all about it here:

Can you explain the advantages of type B in a domestic AV setup? Who's using type B at the mo?

Sharps new DX1 series are 1080p sets, looking into these myself.

Seem a lot of people are complaining about banding issues on this set on avforums.

Its a shame because they look clear winners really spec wise but looks like Sony W series are the ones to buy at moment.

Local TV shop has them on display, so going to have a look.
I wouldn't buy a Sony, rather have Samsung, LG....or even Bush :D

Please explain why rather than just posting something for seamingly no reason what so ever - after all the Sony's have been getting KO reviews all over the place - possibly anti Sony bias rather than against the product?

firstborn - not sure who is using type b hdmi (or version 1.3) but it was only ratified as an "official" type August 2006 if I remember wiki link above correctly

main advantage would be if you have a pc attached with a very new graphics card ( without meaning to be patronising htpc usage would be domestic av usage as you put it) alos depending on the av amp you have or might be getting Denon and a few others may prefer one type or other for HDMI switching capabilities etc

Because Sony are overpriced, low quality and no better than any others. Not worth the price premium.

Umm in this case none of that is true. Clearly you have not auditioned these TVs.

I have seen the Bravias, the fujitsu's the toshibias, the Panasonics, the Pioneers, the LGs, and the sharps. the Bravia for the price wins hands down. The fujitsus are a close second at 150% the price.
