Hi there,
Sorry to create yet another one...you lot must be bored of all these posts by now! And it's not even xmas yet

Like many others, I've aquired a Canon 400D as my first DSLR. It arrived today and I've spent the last couple of hours tweaking and adjusting functions well beyond my simple POS knowledge. Nevertheless, using the camera before reading the manual is not too bad, and after trying a few things in manual mode this evening, along with a tripod, I managed to take this...

Don't know how much people like these Christmas type shots, but I like it a fair bit.

C+C welcome :)

i can see your reflection in the bauble. this is a crop i take it then? anyway, its a very good pic, but please use less Jpeg compression (i can see the artifacts!)

Thanks :)

Yea I noticed the reflection...do you think it spoils it? No it's not a crop, it's resized but apart from that that's how it came off the camera.
By artifacts what are you referring to? I used setting 5 on the PS jpeg compression slider, will try turning it up.

OK, attempt number 2.

Done a bit of brightness/contrast adjusting and have turned down compression.

i really like the pic its well composed however i feel the reflection does let it down somewhat. really good work. I have the same camera and know that you will have loads of fun with it.

How would you go about minimising reflections such as these in photos? Is it a case of photoshop, or clever use of angles?

Great picture, but I think it'd look better without the reflection :)

I also bought a 400d at the weekend.

It came with a 18-55 mm and 70-200mm lense.

Here is a pic I took using the 70-200mm.

I've also been playing with aparture sizes and shutter speeds etc. I have a lot to learn.

i see no pic, though I do see a link in this quote?

Hmm though not in the post

You have written http:// twice in your image link.

Nice loco. Can't say I'm that into train spo.. photography myself though. :)

i think the image could have benefited from some motion blur - i.e. reducing the shutter speed and in turn able to turn down to 100 ISO.

Just my thought not meant to be nasty in anyway. As i look at the photo, its fine to look at, however a bit of motion in the loco could have just given it a little more effect.

And one more I took this evening...
