New 4870, I can hear windows load but nothing on screen...

So theres no chance of it being the ageia physx drivers causing the problem?

I had worried about the PSU beforehand, on this Hiper 580W Type R I'm running:

8200 C2D at 3.36Ghz
x2 1Gb DDR2 (upped in voltage by 0.2V)
3 SATA HDD
DVD drive
4870
Audigy 2ZS
PCI ethernet card
Freezer 7 Pro
x2 120mm case fans

doubt it mate bios is the most basic level drivers software dont come into it if you dont even get a boot screen it is usually hardware related

try running with minimal stuff plugged in eg hard drive video card see if that helps

If the physx drivers didn't affect it then it must have been increasing the PCI-E voltage but 0.1V that let me boot into Windows.

Is it going to be an issue to run it like this? At least while I look into getting a better PSU.

Have you tried changing the PCI-E speed in BIOS? Any other BIOS settings that may be trying to o/c the PCI-E or GFX? Might be worth writing down your BIOS settings, resetting to defaults and then slowly move back to where you are now to see what affects it. Also un-hook any non-essential h/w to reduce power reqs.

Though there may still be a problem with it, it at least sounds now that it's not that the GFX card is totally borked.

But the card doesn't work thats the thing, right from pressing the power button, nothing displays on the screen, it stays in standby mode and only reason I can tell that windows has loaded to the login screen is that I can hear the sound that Vista makes but there is still nothing on the screen.

 Sorry, I did not read Your question very well did I ?

There are apparently some led's on the 4870 somewhere near the power connector, It may be worth looking for any info on fault codes

The other thing I would try is to see if the card runs in another PC, even with a weak power supply You would think basic 3d loads should be OK

It is working now after I increased the PCI-E voltage in BIOS by 0.1V.

Well I've not had a motherboard with PCI-E voltage adjustmemts, I remember on a board Years ago there was a "vddq" setting I recall it upped the signal control voltage to the card, I assume thats what Your setting did basically to overcome signal noise !
As Long as Your up and running...enjoy the Card ;)

Mine did that first time i fired it up , i just unplugged the monitor cable from the card and pluged it into the other output and the display came on

i installed the drivers , re-booted and its been ok since, system and gfx card is overclocked and i increased the pcie frequency to 105 , it said on the ati site that that was the optimal operating frequency

I just installed my 4870, from an 8800GT. I uninstalled all the drivers and ran Driver Sweeper and Driver Cleaner as well as CCleaner but when I boot with the 4870, the fan stays on max all the time and the screen stays in standby mode.

The strange things is, the PC is booting and I can hear the Vista loading sound.

I hope this isn't a dead card :(

Any ideas?

press control alt+delete and it loads, worked for me :)
