New 8800 GTS - few questions

Hi, just installed my 8800 GTS 320 mb and it's awesome, nearly double the performance of my previous X1800 XT, and to my delight it's as quiet as the VF900 I had on my X1800 XT too.

Anyway, I'm using the 162.18 drivers for XP32. First thing is I can't set the resolution to either 1280*800 or 1440*900, they're not in the list. I know my Dell 2007WFP has a native res of 1680*1050, but I'd still like to be able to drop the res down occasionally in really demanding stuff (esp with Crysis/Bioshock on the way). Anyone know why they're not available? I've ticked 'allow modes not exposed by the display' but that didn't make those resolutions available.

Next question - is the classic control panel gone forever cause I'm not too keen on the default one.

Third question - when I set flat panel scaling to 'use nvidia scaling with fixed aspect ratio' and hit 'apply' the setting keeps defaulting back to 'use my displays built in scaling'.

FYI I've used driver cleaner pro in safe mode after uninstalling my previous ATI drivers. All games tested are working fine.

Just beta drivers maybe?

You can set nearly any res even weird ones in the Nvidia control panel under Custom Resolutions, I use the Classic view CP so not sure where to find it in your set up.


Cut and paste the following block of text From the W in windows down to
the last 1 in the Taskbar UI policy. Then save the file as a .REG file.
Either double click the REG file or right click and MERGE it with your
registry.

You should then be able to use the classic panel again!

Cheers, the control panel thing worked perfectly, that's much better :)

On the resolutions though it keeps saying 'custom resolution can't be added' when I try to add 1280*800 32-bit @ 60 Hz. My monitor can definitely do that res because I used it with my previous card. Still can't get aspect ratio scaling to stay selected either.
 
I cant remember as I have a 22" CRT so all res are there by default, but I have seen it refuse a entry but there is setting to allow it AFAIK.

EDIT : I just added that RES you stated exactly same specs inc HZ, there is a setting checked by default "Hide Settings Montor Cant Support", try unchecking it, although I did not need to.

I am using my legit montor drivers BTW not XP ones, it knows my screen RES/HZ at each setting and correct Colour Profile as of .ini and .inf files from Mitsubishi, the XP driver does not and it states my max res is much lower than it really is.

Yeah, already tried that 'allow modes not exposed by moniotor' setting. Just says custom resolution can't be added and if I try the test it says test failed. Just swapped the drivers for the WHQL 162.18s rather than the betas and they do the same thing.

Also tried swapping which monitor is connected to which DVI port, and tried disabling my 2nd display. Still no joy. It's not a driver problem either since Dell don't do drivers for their monitors.

I have five monitors in device manager, 3 default monitors and 2 plug and play monitors. Just tried deleting them all and rebooting, same problems.

Not sure about your resolution problem, but the aspect ratio/scaling won't stick under Windows XP because of the way they've incorporated DRM in the 8800 Series drivers.

Oddly enough it works fine under Vista, just Nvidia's "fine" driver team at it again. :rolleyes:
 
Ok, thanks, luckily the 2007WFP has a 4:3 mode, it's just a bit of a pain going through the monitors OSD every time I run a 4:3 game to set it. Would have been nice for the drivers to do it automatically. Not a big deal though.

Still perplexed at why standard resolutions are just missing like this. Anyone else using these 162.18 drivers (or any other drivers for that matter) on a 20"/22" 1680*1050 LCD with an 8800 series card and can confirm that they can select 1280*800 and 1440*900? Thanks.

I can only get 1680x1050, 1600x900, 1280x1024, 1280x960, 1152x864, 1024x768 and 800x600 on mine. :(
 
My 2nd display is a 19" widescreen TFT and I have no problems setting it to its native res of 1440x900 - using VGA as thats all the display has.

BFG 320mb 8800 GTS is the card

Same here, except I don't get 1280*960. Maybe nvidia just don't do 1280*800 and 1440*900, or maybe the 8800 isn't communicating with the monitor correctly, or maybe the 8800 isn't working quite right on my old 939 board.

Wouldn't be a total disaster if I never got those modes working, but I'd still like to have them.

I'll probably try some older drivers a little later.

I think it's purely down to what resolutions the monitor itself supports, I had a 1440x900 Hyundai LCD before this one. As mentioned a few posts up, have you installed the Dell drivers for the monitor?
 
I was using 1440*900 and 1280*900 on this screen with my X1800 XT although I suppose it could be possible that the screen was still running 1680*1050 and the ATI drivers were providing those modes. I've checked the monitors manual and it doesn't list which modes it supports, just the presets. Dell monitors don't have drivers btw so it's not that.

I'll try another DVI cable just in case, I still think it's a communication problem between 8800 and monitor. I'll also try using VGA since that would at least confirm the monitor does those resolutions.
 
Sorry I'm semi-hijacking this thread... just ordered an 8800GTS today, and was wondering if all the cards are green? Or are there still some black ones kicking about? It's an XFX Xtreme version (560/1700).

Mine is green :)

Anyway, tried another DVI cable, same result. Tried VGA and now 1280*800 is available and working correctly (but not 1440*900), so that confirms the monitor does do 1280*800. Strange that res works through analogue but not through digital, since it worked through both analogue and digital with my ATI card/drivers just yesterday.
 
You can restore the "fixed aspect ratio scaling" in 8800 cards by running a small patch:

The reason nVidia disabled it in 8800 cards is because they had to, in order to remain HDCP compliant.

The download contains 2 files. One installs the patch, the other removes it.

Installing the patch will disable HDCP (high-bandwidth digital content protection) support, which is required for playback of protected HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVD content over digital interfaces.

That patch hasn't worked for me, ever.

The only fix that's worked for me is having the monitor turned off until in Windows.

Wow I presumed it was a bug never knew it was because they wanted to remain HDCP compliant.
