So Alienware announced some new laptops. At first glance the laptops look quite lack luster. Will be interesting to see some benchmarks and reviews on these. I was planning to upgrade my current laptop once newer laptops (GPU + CPU) upgrades came along.

Whats every ones thoughts on them if anyone has had a look ?

Looking at the max 17"

£2,549:
Overclocked Intel® Core™ i7-4900MQ (8MB Cache, up to 4.0GHz w/ Turbo Boost)
English Windows® 7 Home Premium (64 BIT)
17.3 inch (439.42 mm) WLED FHD (1920 x 1080) Anti-Glare Display
16GB2 Dual Channel DDR3L at 1600MHz
750GB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s + 64GB mSATA SSD Caching
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 780M with 4GB GDDR5
Slot-Loading Dual Layer Blu-ray Reader (BD-ROM, DVDRW, CD-RW)
LCD Back Cover (WLAN) Alienware 17
Broadcom 4352 802.11 ac 2x2 and Bluetooth 4.0

4.15 kg.

The 18" doesn't have much details up yet except SLI options. But considering how much spec above costs I imagine the 18" being really expensive.

Has anyone dabbled with the 3D gaming?

I see these LCD's have the option for 120hz 3D, im guessing you need glasses for these too?

Usually I'd be the person to explain why Alienware is over Clevo, but with the new Clevo series actually being good and those prices. I do not see the point in getting one anymore

Plus the R4 personally looks better than the R5

Well apparently its being built with Magnesium Alloy instead of plastic.

The 1080 screen is an IPS screen (Matte optional) which lets face it the glossy screen of the R4 is a right pain in daylight.

Its based on GTX 780M with Haswell and the entire trackpad lights up, which is alienware all over. going on from what i've seen, its not going to win hearts from first glance, its a bit of a grow on you design.

However, if its got the same build quality of the R4 should be a good laptop.

I wonder who actually buys Dell laptops on anything other than the outlet... They're usually such awful value otherwise

It's the same with sports equipment (not always, most of the time better materials) and clothing, people will pay through the roof for the name on it, giving companies profits like you wouldn't expect.

It's just on a larger scale.

I think as already mentioned, from what I read the R4's where better for keeping the system cool compared to most other laptops on the market. But if the Clevo's are just as good if not better I will most likely opt for one of those.

I decided to skip the R4 and wait until the new CPU's and GFX cards were out and see what was available. The MSI's are looking pretty damm nice at the moment but I think I will wait for some reviews and/or feedback from this here forum before I make the plunge to a new laptop.

I currently have a Samsung G700A which is still going fairly strong if I'm honest. But I would like something with a bit more grunt to handle some of the newer PC games.

Given the choice I would go back to a desktop, but due to the nature of my work I move between two-three countries where I "setup base" for a while so a gaming laptop is the only way for me.

I just had a quick look at their website and they are really expensive. I know they are normally but they are really very expensive this time round.

but then again they are new to the market. MSI lappys in OCuk are not the cheapest as well and no on complains ...
You could expect that sort of pricing on brand new market product.

That is actually not too bad a deal when placed alongside the offerings from MSI. That CPU is a good bit more faster than the standard 4700MQ and costs considerably more, yet that DELL is costing on average just 200 GBP more than the equivalent MSI GTX 780 model. I notice that they also offer Windows 7 as an option. If I knew then what I know now regarding Windows 8, I would have bitten off Dell's hands for a Haswell gaming laptop with a functioning Windows 7 installation, that offers more or less the same quid for quid performance as what I now own does.

The prices are pretty ridiculous on the new models - i ended up ordering a R2 14" as it was so much better value for money (and with the coupon/discount also cheaper than the outlet model with worse spec).

Do look tempting though - ive had every previous alienware so ill no doubt end up picking up an outlet model at some point.

I wonder why they dropped the Killer wireless NIC. I thought they were supposed to be the preferred choice for gaming on wireless connections.

I have to say though I am sorely tempted by one of the new Alienwares. I have a 10% off coupon, plus Dell are doing a 0% payment plan over 10months. Which well I don't really need I have the money but still always nice to pay over a few months if it isn't costing me anything.

I've only seen one review up on the new Alienware laptops though so I'm still inclined to hold off for a while.

I'd hold off for a month to see reviews, let them settle in etc.. Your samsung is still a very capable laptop.

They are expensive but they do look to be very well spec and look like they'll be every bit as good as the R4.

the killer wireless in mine is fantastic with my cable wireless router. It can do dual band 5ghz so not sure why they did drop it.
