Not strictly true.
Intel and amd's income does not come from us who pick a pc based on its spec. It comes from businesses buying the cheapest pc's and servers for what they need. These business deals are worth a lot of money and I believe currently, or for a time, amd was largely beating intel on this front.
The second major income point would be the home pc bought by those that go to purple shirt wearing bad retail shops etc. Once again, these pc's are built by the cheapest supplier who cuts deals with intel or amd. These have little reflection on the performance of the chips, just simply who would go the cheapest.
However, intel has a better reputation amongst those that know nothing for some strange reason and this helps them sell their cpu's to the said customers. Amusingly then there are the people who know a little but not much and presume that amd is better because it was always better priced and then you have people who actually know something and know that its highly dependant on what you want from your pc and your budget as to which cpu is best
