if i spend around £500 for an amp to get better features like HDMI though and some new sound formats will i get as good sound quality as my old Yamaha DSP-A1 ?

its over 10 years old but was expensive at the time and im not sure the new amps will be as good quality unless i spend a lot more?

New amps will have upscaling, HDMI switching, room correction, HD decoding, Pro-Logic IIx, Atmos, more customisable speaker crossover, streaming features but it won't have the power of the older AVR's.

Modern Yamaha AVR's are pretty weedy when it comes to power output.

Personally I have heard the Yamaha A1 and I didn't like it, maybe it was just the speakers. You'll probably need to spend £1500 or so to get 100W+ per channel (true power not overflated figures)

thanks hornetstinger, thats pretty much what i thought

i want all the features, but not at the cost of quality

I would suggest hunting for a second hand DSP Z7 or a DSP Z11. They have HDMI & HD sound formats but no Atmos/DTS-X. They were Yamaha's top of the range receivers when released.

I'm surprised there are DSP-A1s still out there working (The displays usually pack up on them). The model will be 20 years old next year, I know because when I worked in electrical retail many moons ago I got to hear one in a customers house. I was :D at a demo of Dragonheart. The following year ('99) I bought a receiver to do that job & a few DVD's to go with it.
