Alright lads, first post here and it's not a positive one. Started off around 3 months ago as an apprentice plant mechanic coming straight out of school. I had been getting negative vibes from the 'foreman'. I then discover he has a problem with showing me the ropes and teaching me. He refuses to take me out with him and leaves me in the workshop with nothing to do purely down to the fact that he believes he should he paid more money. I fear that without his guidance I might not fulfil my potential. Any advice would be greatly appreciated guys. Thanks

You need to tell your boss that you are not happy and feel you could be shown much more, as currently you are not being able to fulfil your potential. Make sure you are polite and in no way aggressive though!
Also, start looking for a new job just in case things turn sour.

Has your boss actually said he deserves more money than you? It would be a strange thing to say as of course you are cheaper - You are the trainee.

Can anyone else in the firm train you? Sounds like even if this guy was forced by the boss to train you he would probably just use you as a gofer and deliberately screw up your apprenticeship.

Imo you need someone else entirely with the correct attitude

Yeah there is a few other guys. They don't seem to have the same attitude so hopefully things will work out fine.

I've been there Dundee, 2 years ago I finished my 4yr apprenticeship but when I first arrived it was the tail end of the old school era of fitters. The mess room wasn't a friendly place and you sat in the corner on your crash hat eating lunch etc but after a while they'll tire of being a **** and slowly (as long as you don't **** much up) they'll start to trust you and let you know. They say there's not much on and yet they all disappear after tea! Try not to be seen gawking at your iPhone all day and sat around doing nothing, at least sweep up and keep the workbenches clean.

The same cantankerous old boys have since become some of the best people I know. It can be hard and disheartening but stick with it dude :)

Please fully star out all swearing in future. Thank you.

Its been an on going problem with apprentices at my company for a long time so I've heard. just gotta grind my teeth and get on with it!!

Maybe try and get friendly with the foreman, buy him a couple of drinks and generally suck him to him that way he may want to help you out and teach you.

If that fails then go to the boss, but I can't see him being any better with you after he finds out you snitched on him.

He thinks it's unreasonable to be given more responsibility without a promotion/payrise.

That's a fair opinion to have, but promotions don't work this way.

You have to prove that you're already doing much more than you're being compensated for - then the promotion comes to you.

There's every chance you can become this guy's boss by following this principle... if that's what you want.

Sounds like a jobsworth, he needs reminding that nobody got paid more to train him, what he is asked to do in the hours he is paid for is up to his boss.

Typical entitlist attitude that ran this country into the ground in the 1970's and 80's.
