New Astra VXR gets 0-62mph time

335D only has 8bhp more, and manages the same 0-60 time, yet needs third gear to do more than about 56mph.....so 5.9 when it can do it in 2nd doesnt seem that incredible to me

It does look quite nice though. The Drexlers are reported to be very good bits of kit.

Last time I spotted that reg plate it was on a VXR8.

Long 2nd gear = low 0-60 = marketing win

Marketing alone won't allow a car to post a 0-60 like that using only 2nd gear. Not that 0-60 means anything really

No, but as he said a long 2nd gear will.
You need the engine capable, i think a mini one will do 60 in second. Doesn't mean it's going to get a sub 6 sec 0-60

It's nothing new though as Rover turbos could do 72 in second 20 years ago, so on reflection it's a bit of an irrelevant point. As I imagine most fast fwds will do over 60 in 2nd

Are we to assume then that Vauxhall gave up making it drive as nicely as a Golf or handle like a Focus and decided to just go POWA!!!"!"!""$$$ instead?

I think it looks ok. Ooops.

Be interesting to look how it delivers that power. Must be a big turbo for 1.4 bar on a 2 litre

Reminds me of an article I read where a motoring magazine testing a new Aston, couldn't match the 0-60 time stated by the manufacturer.

They called AM who sent down an engineer to demonstrate the car could indeed hit the given 0-60 time. Turns out the trick was to hit the rev limiter in 2nd, which is what the AM engineer did.

Don't dismiss the importance of 0-60 times with regards to marketing. Sure, on the road it means very little however.

Stick to GD.

You've obviously not heard the induction noise which turbos make which isn't all that dissimilar with a jet engine, albeit on a smaller scale.

I like this new Astra. If only for the improved interior. The current one is horrid.
