I decided to retire my 11 year old Yamaha AVR as I now wanted to stream Spotify and add Bluetooth to the setup, also two HDMI in stop working.
I've replaced it with a Denon S770H AVR and upgraded the centre to an Accoustic Energy centre, the old Q Accoustics centre was probably about 25-30 years old and was starting to sound like me on a bad day!
Setup went fairly smoothly, I only had to restore to factory once which is good for me, the only anomaly being that I had to lie that I had surround fronts which I haven't since it wouldn't let me install my surround rears if I didn't lie. I haven't done the Audyssey thing yet.

The connections: Sky box to AVR HDMI in, AVR HDMI out to TV HDMI ARC. Other inputs are a Panasonic Blu-Ray player and a 4K Fire Stick. Other speakers are front and rear surrounds all Monitor Audio about 8 years old. I'm not an audiophile and to me they sound just fine.

My problem is only with the SkyBox audio, it's great coming out of the centre but appalling coming out of the 4 surround speakers, very faint and distorted, there must be a setting somewhere but I'm stumped, any ideas gratefully received. The surround speakers work fine with the Fire Stick and Blu-Ray.
Incidentally I researched whether the TV picture would be improved if I ran the Sky through the AVR, the results were varied but most seemed to say that there would be no improvement or marginal. We both think that the picture is significantly improved, the TV is a 10 year old Sony KDL-55W829B, expensive at the time but supports HDMI/ARC input.

Bit of a long shot this one, I've no idea if the sky box has this these days, I quit sky years ago. Is there a setting on the sky box to change the sound output setting on the sky boxes HDMI output? Reason I asked this is because I can do this on my Blu-ray player from PCM to bitstream, I assume something is similar on the sky box.

Thanks for that, it’s already set for HDMI but following on from that I’m investigating my surround speaker setup, the answer may lie there.

Very strange, first thing I would have said is that your AVR is faulty however when you said it's fine for other sources then it's not that.

Even if it's in Pro-Logic mode (sending it PCM) it shouldn't be faint and distorted from the rears
