Need a new bag and was wondering if anyone has recommendations. I'm back at uni (doing architecture) and want a bag I can carry my camera (5d2 with 24-70 usually but up to 70-200 would be ideal) in along with my sketchbook/book and a couple pens etc. I'm after a shoulder bag style as I have rucksacks for cameras and they are too bulky for daily use I've stopped taking my camera places with me.

I'm just after something really casual.

I've got a lowepro magnum 650w which I keep all my kit in at home or take for big jobs, a slingshot 200 which doesn't fit my camera (was bought for old body), and my current day out bag: a tarmac aero 80 (which also holds a laptop so is pretty bulky).

Thanks

With my old 40D 24-70L / 70-200 2.8L (either of those at any time) I used a lowepro toploader zoom aw... Was great. Fit the camera and either lens no problem and isn't over the top. But fails on the sketchbook issue.

To be honest, the above that Ray has recommended looks perfect. Understated too so not overly obvious.

Lowepro Stealth Reporter D550 AW

I have the Stealth Reporter D300AW and it fits my 1DSmk3, 24-70 F2.8, 70-200 F2.8, 50mm, 85mm, 2x580ex mk2s, extension tubes, a few filters, spare batteries and memory cards etc. the d550 adds a slot for a 15" laptop, so could be perfect for your pad?

Tom.

That thinktank looks perfect! Cheers Raymond!

I've had a look at the other ones mentioned and that is definitely most like what I'm after. Thanks to everyone else too!

EDIT:
Just ordered one ^^

Ive got the Lowepro fast pack 250 and its brilliant, you might want to look at the 350 version.

I've got that one too (fastpack 250), but I think the op might find it too bulky. It is a superb bag though, and easily carries a 15inch laptop too, but of course this makes it weigh a lot!

Yeh I was after a sling bag, as i've got a rucksack already. Thanks

I know you have already ordered, but the LowePro Classified 200 is a fantastic bag and I think that both the larger 200AW or the slightly smaller 160AW would have met your requirements.

I think the "problem" with lowerpro and crumpler are that i can still tell they are camera bags. The thinktank one is a lot more like a Casual messenger bag that the OP required.

Here is my issue with "discreet" bags;

I don't know about you, but as a photographer I can spot a camera bag from 30 yards! (However far that may be?!) Even the most casual of muggers would clock you taking out equipment to shoot... So there goes the "protection" of an understated bag.

It's quite well known that Pro togs, tend to look to ThinkTank to protect their gear... It's no secret, they produce great bags. They are expensive, but the majority of people who buy them have invested enough money into their equipment, for this cost to negligent...

But, therefore any lowlife scum worth their salt would know that generally ThinkTank bag = Lots of expensive gear inside. So all it takes is an afternoon familiarising oneself with the ThinkTank range on their website... and bingo, you too can clock them from 30 yards! (I've still not found out how far this is?!)

By this logic, ThinkTank bags are surely a target over the more widespread LowePro, Crumpler offerings which generally tend to be housing a low spec camera and a few cheap lenses (see sig :p)

Still think ThinkTank is a good idea? :p

Well, better discrete than bright colours?

:p

P.s. I have a crumpler bag, and a thinktank case. I think the crumpler bag is a lot more prominent in a crowd.

Yeah this is true. I'm sure a bright red Crumpler would stand out far more than a beige TT.

Whatever you choose, it's probably going to attract attention!

I just don't get the arguement to go for a discreet bag... Get insurance and stop worrying! :p

I was looking for a slingshot type bag, and came across the Kata 3N1. An absolutely superb bag, and I recommend anyone who wants a lightweight slingshot that can be used left or right handed try it out in the shop. Make sure you get a knowledgeable assistant to show you how it WORKS because it's a bit of a revelation! One of my favourite features, is using the bag in the front position as a sturdy hand rest. It fits my Canon 550d with kit lens, 55-250, 10-22 and batteries, timers, filters etc. so a reasonable size too.

Still looks a bit like a camera bag, although you can't really get away from that imo unless you resort to putting your equipment in a berghaus rucksack or something!

Anyway, the tripod that I strap to the outside of my bag is a dead giveaway!! :D

btw, that ThinkTank bag is very nice :)

OK look, I never said I wanted a discrete bag ^^ I just wanted something a bit more stylish and casual. I lot of camera bags look pretty geeky which is why I've gone with the pinestone.
