New Barcelona Server benchmarks...

Hmm,

I thought Core2's were already averageing 20% faster than X2's clock for clock.

Overall they show that kinda gain... but if you take say an X2 4800 up against a E6600 in say CSS Source Stress test the X2 will get raped silly and again with media encoding, etc. theres enourmous gains on the conroe closer to the order of twice the performance... never mind superPi and the likes.

Sounds pretty much like I was saying awhile back in earlier posts... too little too late...

Q6600 it is for now ;) dont think theres the choice anyhow phenoms are due this fall to early next year I belive.

I bet there similar in performance anyhow.... but by then intel will have upped there quality/performance as they do bit by bit.

So are AMD`s new Quads going to be

A) better than Intels current Quads.
B) Worth waiting for.

Quick answer, no and no.

Judging by the benchmarks on techreport which can be taken as a basis for phenom performance (but shouldn't be taken as 100% accurate) phenom is at best equal to the current C2D's. (this is a very rough conclusion) However penryn is supposed to be 5-10% quicker than conroe thus giving intel an advantage.

For me phenom is too little too late. I don't doubt it will sell but tbh considering how long we have had to wait it just isn't good enough.

well no cause thats impossible, because K8 processors are more or less dead even with C2D in terms of price/performance, thats what people look at you know, so it should be ok as long as there good price/performance wise, and plus early benchmarks before the chips are even retail is never concrete proof of how something will perform, lets just wait and see :)

arrrggghhhh

Upgrade or wait

I cant stand it. Im going crazy.

The desktop parts arent gonna be out for a few months yet... think AMD said in 2-3 months time... knowing them thats early next year for phenom.

But they havent exactly been clear on the subject of an actual release date.

Id say Q6600 for now...

Erm, Clairvoyant: why, precisely, do you need to upgrade? Is it "newstuff-itis" because I find it difficult to believe your rig is in dire need of a performance shot to the arm...

Not my business, I know. I'm just curious.

There are a couple of interesting threads developing over at Xtremesystems for those who want a look as to what people are doing with early release specimens of Barcelona...

yeah the Q6600 is proberbly the best processor for the money at the moment, its quad core, highly overclockable, reasonably futureproof considering most stuff doesn't challange the dual-core conroes, might be tempted to go for a Q6600 in the near future myself, depends, my X2 runs everything fine so far, but theres some stuff just over the horizon, crysis, unreal and such that might give it a kick in the teeth and my processor might be holding GPU back a bit, decisions decisions
