Ho!

My TV has finally given way. I'm look for something ~ 42" but im not interested in Smart or 3D or any of that stuff, i just want a good TV with decent motion and good blacks.

Last time i was in the market for one, it was all about Plasma. I assume im choosing between LCD, LED and OLED now? That right?

Any particular brands i should be looking at that make decent bang for buck basic TVs?

Virtually all 42 inch tvs will now come with smart features, coupled with some form of 3d, if they have a good screen. At the cheaper end of the market you can exclude either of the above, but coupled with this exclusion will be the loss of the good screen.

How much are you looking to spend?

I was really hoping to pick up something tidy from 350-450, since I dont want any of the extra stuff shoved in it. I dont need freeview or rubbish youtube interfaces as I just have a laptop plugged into the AV Amp for all that stuff

pick up the newest and biggest Sony you can for your budget.

no point looking at any other manufacturer unless you want an inferior tv.

Samsung would be my second choice of manufacturer to look at.

for your budget though your not going to get a decent tv tbh. all decent tv's are 42" minimum and they include smart tv and 3d.

it's like saying i want a decent car but i don't want a radio or traction control, all decent cars come with them as standard, yes there may be some exceptions but they are usually very rare and not suitable for most people tbh.

sony do make some non smart and non 3d lower end panels, but even with £300 your going to struggle to get one of them.

your better off saving up £500-£600 tbh. that's where the decent tv's start and usually people buy around the £1K mark on average for a decent screen (people who know what they are looking at). for a top screen your looking at £2.5-£3K for a VT65B or a ZT65B.

I've got the 50" version of that tv. The sounds crap

Most flat screens do have poor sound. Does anyone remember what the masses were complaining about the last month or so… Something they were complaining how they couldn't hear speech dialog in some TV series? Due to the fact how poor most speakers are in todays flat screens.

I remember them vaguely talking about it on BBC News and Sky News.

and whatever i do i cant get the red to look red.

You wont. Not without hardware and software to calibrate red correctly. Plus it might not even be that due to the price. Some sets have screwed up Colour Management Systems where 50 - 75% can be in line with the designated targets but undersaturated or even oversaturated. While 100% red could be in the direction of orange red or down towards purplish red on the CIE chart.

Or some sets just has a poor greyscale that has lots of compromises. One can never know without hardware and software to see how the TV controls react to the colour. As well as some sets don't even have adjustable CMS.
