New BlackBerry 8900

cheers buddy, going over there now

as someone who uses crackberry, any other good apps you recomend ?

Oh theres quite a few...actually the other one thats similar to berrybuzz is another apps called BBAlerts but thats pretty expensive $15:o...wouldnt recommend that as i bought it myself before the berrybuzz app came out:p.

Other apps i have on my phone are:

Quickpull...free and simulates a battery pull without you having to physically take the battery cover off...also can schedule battery pulls each day at whatever time you want.

BB appworld...similar to the iphone app store...free

Crackberry Launcher...instead of having to type in the address of crackberry...it puts an icon on your homescreen or menu screen..just launches the crackberry site....free to use and download

Quicklaunch...quite a good app...you can set your convenience key to open it and within there you can have certain apps that you use the most...saves u from having to go into menu then clicking on the app...think its around $5 if im not mistaken.

Googlemaps of course...free of course

Google search...just an app which gives you a search box for google...saves u from having to open the browser each time....free of course

Google synch...synch your contacts and calendar items with your google account...free of course

Gmail app...if you need to see your folders within gmail as BIS doesnt give u that option....free of course

Vlingo...voice command app..you can send a text/email via your voice amongst other things...its free.

Shazam...exactly like the iphone app...free of course.

Aerize alerts...gives you a pop up box for emails, texts and missed calls..also supports pics for contacts...think its about $9 or something. Quite a few of these apps flying around but Aerize i find is the best one altho it does have its niggles etc. Theres a new one called berrypopup from the guys who do berrybuzz and berryweather...havent tried it tho.

BBfilescout...similar to a windows explorer...can look into your files within your BB...again its free

Filelock...lock away those rude or not to be seen pics...free again.

Berrytorch...simple app which makes your BB act like a flashlight...free again.

Thats all the apps i have on my Bold at the moment..some of them are free and some arent of course...but you will find that most will give you a free trial to try the app before you buy.

Oh and if you want a simple but effective today theme...then get one from here: http://m.onthearm.com/themes.htm. Im using the marco one with wrapping icons....best theme ive seen and its very simple...gives u 2 calener entries on your home screen.

Have fun:)...remember on crackberry theres a forum for apps...think its called 3rd party apps.

Main advantage is that it resets the memory if you pull the battery. This combats memory leaks which the Bold was notorious for and several other devices saw too.

what do people mean by memory leeks

Memory leaks are when the device keeps losing memory over time ie you might start off with say 40mb of free memory but then by end of the day you might only have 10mb left. Now sometimes the phone needs to get used to the apps running so it will lose memory over the course of a few hrs but it does that to settle itself down...if your finding that your memory is getting below 15mb then you have a pretty bad memory leak as the device will start deleting emails, texts etc in order to get back that lost memory.

My 2 Bolds start off with about 45mb at the start of my day and by end of the day it will be down to 35mb...so a 10mb memory drain isnt too bad.

Most of the memory leaks are due to apps running in the background...always make sure you shut the app down and sometimes its just due to the fact that some apps are badly coded ie wont release any memory back when you close it down. Saying that there are apps which will always run...standard vanilla BB will have 5 apps running...those 5 you wont be able to shut down as they are what the phone needs to keep operating.

As i said in my previous post, with my Bold i always do a battery pull around 4am in the morning so by the time i wake up i have a fresh device...i do it through the app Quickpull...its harmless and doesnt do the device any damage...ive been running it since Dec and no probs so far.

Persoanlly i cant arsed to press a combination of keys to reset my device...i just let Quickpull do its job when im sleeping.

Luckily for the 8900 owners, RIM has given you double the RAM that the Bold has...so unless your device has tons of apps running out...your not going to run out of memory anytime soon...unless you have a faulty device.

thanks for clearing that up, mate you should seriously work for BB! i'm pretty much at grips with my 8900 now, really enjoying it and spending 30 mins configuring the email filters is well worth doing. i think i have it set up sweetly!

Good to hear:)...most of the stuff that i have said previously is all down to crackberry...some of the guys on there really know what they are talking about and i sit and read what they have to say. Plus a lot of my knowledge comes from actually messing around with the phone itself...if the phone messes up i just do a reboot and that usually fixes it altho a few times ive had to re-load the OS as i messed around with the internal operating system of the BB.

But glad to hear that ive been of some help:).

spawn, got one more question for you,:p I'm not sure if my bb is using my wireless networks i have added to it, which so far is work, home and my misses house, is there a way i can check as the web seems slow, it states on the home screen that the connection is there, but not sure if the web is using it

Well if the icon is white then its using the WIFI connection...if its grey then it wont be using WIFI.

Also if you open your browser then instead of getting the GPRS or EDGE icon...it should show as WIFI in white at the top right hand corner....if it doesnt then it wont be using WIFI as your connection.

I would like to know if you can tell the browser what connection to use cause I always have a gprs signal and the browser picks it all the time instead of the faster wifi which I would like it to use.

ok will give that a try, seems slow but could be the device is slow compared to my pc as that would be the case i guess

Shouldnt make a difference tbh...i use wifi at home, have a 20mb line and its super fast...much faster than 3G is.

If your talking about the length of time it takes to render a page then you need to fix your browser settings.

Open your browser up and click on your bb button...then scroll to options and then browser config...in there tick support Javascript, untick allow javascript popups...everything else is ticked...show images should be on WML&HTML pages...browser identification is Blackberry.

Save and exit out and that should in theory make your browsing slightly faster.

If that doesnt help then reboot your wifi connection and see if that helps...it also could be some of the pages you are trying to get to are slow themselves.

You can by opening your browser and going into the options..if you go into browser config...at the top you should have some options ie on mine i have web n walk browser, t-zones and hotspot browser.

I leave mine on web n walk and it doesnt make a blind bit of difference to my wifi connection.

I suggest you reboot your wifi connection and see if it picks it up...or turn off your mobile connection and just try with your WIFI connection..see if you can browse the net with the mobile connection off.

By the way some little bit of info i found out through crackberry is that quite a few people on Orange have had issues connecting to WIFI on their BB's....so if your on Orange...its probably a good idea to ring them up and ask them why they have disabled WIFI browsing...ask to speak to the BB guys as the script monkeys there wont have a clue. So if your on Orange ring them up and tell them your having connectivity issues on BIS with WIFI and they should get it sorted out for you.

Wifi works but you have to have no gprs/edge connection for it to be forced to use wifi as there is no other choice. Since I am stuck on gprs and can't get edge, wifi is so much faster. I am on O2 btw.

That's not correct - the device will use Wi-Fi whenever it is available. Only WAP data will continue over GPRS / EDGE / 3G etc when in both Wi-Fi & cellular coverage.

Just remembered, that there are also BES IT policies that can restrict Wi-Fi traffic, but it's rare for these to be in place as they're not default and only effect users on a BES.
