New BMI Calculation :D

Apparently I'm obese... I'm 6ft 1 and weigh 103kg. and I am definitely not 'fat' or 'obese'

BMI is crap. Doesn't take into account muscle/fat ratio etc.

Crap.

Bah, still overweight. But in the old system, I was only 1 point away from the "obese" category when I'm clearly nowhere near actually being obese.

What is it with people still using this pointless measurement, honestly its as practical as an IQ test.

The only way to have an accurate BMI is to do a Body Fat Analysis in one of those chamber things, obviously expensive, but still.

This is a good enough approximation for by far the majority of people, actually.

Unless you're uber ripped, it's a reasonable first order approximation. However, I know the old system was based on your weight divided by your height squared. But in reality, as you scale things up, including the human body, weight increases as the cube of the height. It's basic geometry. A better system would be [a number]*weight/height^3.

Funnily enough i've just come back from my health assesment. Came up with a BMI of 21.5 which the physiologist said was pretty meaningless unless it took into account build, therefore a body fat percentage is more meaningful - which came out at 17%.

id say that was too heavy your only 6,1 I was fat at 6ft 5 and weighed in at 103kg, now 85kg and 14% body fat, thats marathon running for you ;)

For measuring certain large population groups BMI is fine, individually though it's much better to just get some skinfold calipers if you'd want to find out your body fat %.
