The only way to have an accurate BMI is to do a Body Fat Analysis in one of those chamber things, obviously expensive, but still.

This is a good enough approximation for by far the majority of people, actually.
Unless you're uber ripped, it's a reasonable first order approximation.

BMI is crap. Doesn't take into account muscle/fat ratio etc.

You're wrong; the model is a good enough approximation for the majority of people (not, as you imply, some kind of narrow average).BMI is still a crap system for anyone who isn't completely average.
