Hi guys,

I'm stuck trying to decide what SSD to get for a boot drive. I'll be putting Windows 7, CS4 and Office on it then everything else on my old Barracudas so 64Gb is plenty.

I'm waaay behind on tech at the moment so I haven't got a clue where to start. From what I've read the Crucial C300 is the way forwards but I've only got a sata2 motherboard and I don''t fancy forking out for a new controller as well (assuming I could make it fit!)

Budget's around £120, I was considering a pair of Patriots in RAID0 as a cheaper option but I haven't got a clue. Any ideas?

C300 will work on sata II as well, it just maxes out the read speed of your sata controller. Only sequential reads are affected though from the benchmarks I have seen/produced.

You do not need a new controller

If you check the reviews, look at 4K performance. Get what you want/can justify but the C300 is the better drive over the patriot even on sata II

You can only do 70mph but you dont buy cars limited to this do you?

yeah, but sata II is a physical limit. you can go over 70mph, just make sure the police aint watching...

Anyways, the optimistic side:
Even if it is slightly limited by sata II, its still going to be a LOT faster than whatever setup you had before. Then, if you ever do get a controller card/new motherboard, the same drive will be FASTER STILL :O

win win if you ask me XD

exactly. As a boot drive the C300 is fantastic. If you edit photos/video and write to the SSD a lot then obviously the vertex 2 is better. People seem to think that because the C300 says Sata III that its crippled on Sata II, its not. I wish they would look at the benchmarks and realise sequential reads are not the be all and end all.
