New Build - 4k Future Proof - £2k budget

Update: got the wrong tracking link from OcUK - honest mistake, nobodies fault. My system hasn't been built yet as still awaiting the motherboard :rolleyes:

Seeing as how we're still waiting on the motherboard and the system is yet to be built I made some tweaks

@Minato

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cors...lar-power-supply-cp-9020194-uk-ca-24r-cs.html

cheaper, 10yr uk rma and like seasonic replaced like for like bar from German . and quieter

- Out of stock unfortunately, however the 750W version of the same PSU is in stock (1 left) and on sale, making it cheaper than the 650W Seasonic
- White 3200MHz RAM back in stock, swapped the black out
- Got rid of the pointless 2.5" SSD, swapped it for the Samsung EVO NVME (it's £20 off atm) as the Corsair MP510 recommended by Tamzzy et al. is out of stock still.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £283.89 (includes shipping: £0.00)

I spoke to a chap from sales on the phone who made the swaps. The one unfortunate thing he told me was that because they don't physically reserve parts due to not having any space, if someone else were to buy that last 750W PSU, or that last Gigabyte RTX 2080, it would go to them instead. Regarding the B450 MAX motherboard, it's still not arrived at their warehouse and they don't have an ETA beyond "any day now". Worth risking another part going out of stock and continuing to wait? Or are there are any equivalent/better similarly priced motherboards around now.

Hope you're all well @orbitalwalsh @tamzzy @Plec

Current "final" build:
My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,621.77 (includes shipping: £0.00)

Ah mate, what a let down :(

They might chuck you something in as a sorry for getting your hopes up and wasting your day waiting for delivery. Fingers crossed.

Only things I would personally change as I’m using your build as a template for me now.....Cheeky Cheeky :|

Ryzen 7 3700x
M.2 SSD

Instead of the SSD and HDD, these could be added at a later date if needed, but I guess so could an M.2 SSD. But you should get quicker boot/load times to make everything real snappy with an M.2.

Oh and for £10 extra change the RAM for the 3600mhz version as someone previously suggested in the thread.

@Minato

that is shocking. If you buy the parts then that should be yours! regardless if your having it built for you or just a part ! @Gibbo

GIgabyte X570 Gaming X costs slightly more, but means you can slap in 3200-3600hz without worrying if it will work or not. X570 chipsets have priority with vendors for AGESA updates etc

@Minato - well that's a ****! (choose your own preferred 4 letter word)

Echo, @orbitalwalsh's comments regarding your parts - i never realised they didn't reserve your parts if one component wasn't in stock(?) In fact, i thought they did from past spec advice with other members doing exactly this - so a bit confused as to the state of play with custom builds now...

If what you were told is correct, we will need to add this as a caveat to custom build advice in the future (can't see it inspiring people to do it if requiring a key component that's out of stock). Seems nuts - buyer/you may end up waiting indefinitely as different parts go in and out of stock - you could be playing permanent catch up (it's certainly something they should have informed you about, upfront, when initially ordering). Or, you end up paying through the nose for a compromise - which you have with that NVMe (very expensive for 500GB - regardless of sale) and potentially again with the x570 motherboard if you have to upgrade - as the b450 MAX covered your needs. And, unfortunately, that PSU will go out of stock at that price so assuming you will miss out on that too? :/

I know you'd rather not build yourself but if they can't hold components (again boggled) - you're either going to be waiting another month or paying out for more expensive, and in some cases, needless upgrades to get a build that was specced in mid-August.

For example you could get quality 1TB NVMe drive for ~£110 with 5 year warranty and the Tomahawks MAX is available for same price as OcUK and in stock. If you bought all the other components from OcUK, and had the nerve, you could be up and running by the weekend (DOA parts permitting :p). Admittedly, it will make troubleshooting harder but this ambiguous waiting game seems an equal PITA to doing a build from mixed suppliers.

Fully agree with both of you. I rang again today and asked in more detail about the policy - it's still a bit unclear to me, from what I understand your components are generally only reserved when all parts are in stock and it's gone through to the build team, because they physically request them then from the warehouse. But perhaps this is something they can do anyway if you specially ask for it - it's just that because they're so busy at the moment they don't have the space to store said components indefinitely while waiting for parts with unknown ETAs? Regardless I finally got a confirmed date for the B450 motherboard, it's not coming in until next week tuesday/wednesday. So I went ahead with @orbitalwalsh's recommendation and upgraded to the Gigabyte X570 Gaming X. From what I was explicitly told, all of my components are available (including the last units of the RTX 2080 and the PSU) so they can crack on and build it tomorrow.

As long as you're happy with the end result - all that matters.

Hopefully, zero issues from now on - best of luck with it.

wow. good luck !

As @Plec said this would put a lot of us off listing full spec here for OCUK to build - specially during new launches .

almost begs the question to "buy and collect " option then call up and say i've ordered the parts- heres extra cash- now build it lol

i'd personally have gone with a different board...

could push X570 Elite for extra and then gain back £60 steam voucher . Bump up in VRMs

Only running 6/8 cores it seems with zen3 being 7nm+ . Shows B550 will have to walk a fine line, beat out b450 but not touch to much on x570 so not to eat into their sales .

is that his heat gun or ASUS own slides ??? as we know the issues asus have had with vrms and temps .

wish reviewers would just show the damn heat gun real time over a board running with and without heatsinks doing benchmarks and gaming loads - not hard to do really.. everyone is after big views so have to push that extra mile .

Ah well. When I phoned and was told it would be another week and a half for the Tomahawk Max I just said enough is enough. Luckily I had the thread open and @orbitalwalsh was kind enough to link the Gigabyte board as an alternative so I just went with that. Hopefully it shouldn't be a problem, I'm sure if he's recommending it then it's a decent board.

whilst it is a decent enough board, there are better ones in the price range. but as you're only powering a 3600...isn't a biggie ;)

Hold that thought for a few years, we'll revisit it when it's time to upgrade this socket :D

So PC has been built, stress testing happening overnight, delivery scheduled for Saturday.

In the meanwhile i've realised two things:
1. I don't have an optical drive anymore, so I need to figure out a way to install windows 10 to the PC. Probably some form of USB although that sounds like it'll be dreadfully slow.

2. I need to start figuring out what i'm doing re: monitor. I started reading into your ultrawide religion and it does sound promising. I'm hearing about the Alienware AW3418DW, LG 34GK950F/G, and Samsung CRG9 a lot here - but there about several million more ultrawide 32+" 120+hz monitors it seems. Worse yet, there appear to be many promising schrodinger's monitors, simultaneously existing in a state of 'releasing soon' and 'release date unknown'. Add into all of this the Acer Nitro XV273K now being sub-£800 (a panel that i've never seen anything less than a glowing review of) and it's tough to know which direction to look!
