Hi,

Welcome all. This is my first build. Below are the components i am planning to get, already have the ram and cpu.

Motherboard - msi p67a-gd53
Ram - Gskill 8gb ripjaws 1600mhz
Cpu - intel core i7 2600
case - antec 100 or zalman z7-plus (seems to have good reviews)
hard drive - undecided
psu - undecided

Would i need another cooler? the psu already comes with a fan.
Bit stuck on which psu to get any recommedations would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

There are some issues with the build you have suggested. Getting an i7 2600 with a P67 is pointless. The P67 allows you to overclock but the i7 2600 will not overclock, you want the i7 2600k which is more expensive. The P67 also does not include integrated graphics and you have not specified a graphics card.

Also the ripjaw RAM has very tall heatsinks which can cause issues with the CPU heatsink.

Due to the issues with the spec and the fact you are currently undecided on some of the components I think specifying a budget and main use for the system would be a better option for us to help you ;)

please please please tell me you got the 2600K and just forgot to say so in the OP. the K has an unlocked multiplier, which allows overclocking. this can take the chip from 3.3Ghz to 4.6-5Ghz with very little difficulty.

what graphics are you planning on using because you havent got any graphics outputs atall?

RAM i would recommend the 8GB 1600Mhz corsair XMS3 because its cheaper, and wont interfere with any large CPU coolers.

as for the cooler situation, if the processor came with one it will be just fine, unless you have the K variant and want to overclock.

if you dont have the K variant and you have recieved the CPU within 7 days then you can send it back for a full refund under the distance selling regulations.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Ah i see the p67 doesnt included integrated graphics.

Budget ideally less than £500. I only got the i7 2600 because i got a good price for it.

Which components would you recommend ?

Once again thank you so much for your help!

Oh I missed the part about you already having the RAM and CPU.

As Reaper has said if you can I would return them then do it, the reason you got such a good price for the CPU is that it allows no overclocking. One of the best features of Sandy Bridge processors are the ease of overclocking and how far you can actually overclock. If there is no way you can return then we will do our best to spec you a build around these components but it is not ideal.

what are you going to be doing mostly with the computer?

also, sorry to be nosey, but what was the 'really good price'?

no problem £150 same price for an i5 2500k. You're right i might just send it back under the DSR's as its been under 7days

Main use occasional gaming and the pc would be on all day.

With occasional gaming you would need dedicated graphics, I would recommend something along the lines of a 5850. If you did return it would I be correct in assuming it would be a budget of £650 for the tower alone? You can get a good i5 2500k system for that price. The i7 2600k is generally only worth getting if you make use of the hyperthreading such as heavy video encoding. I think a 2500k would suit your needs more?

Thanks. I will return it back and get a i5 2500k based on your advice.

I put together a base build of what you could be looking at. If you want to put more money in then it should probably go on the GPU. It all depends on what games you plan on playing though. These prices are of course, assuming you bought everything from OcUK, you might get better prices if you shop around (although possible increased shipping costs if you order from multiple places).

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM £156.98
1 x MSI P67A-GD65 Intel P67 (socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge) ** B3 REVISION ** with FREE Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler £139.99
1 x Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5850 Extreme 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **OcUK Exclusive** £116.99
1 x Antec High Current Gamer 620W Power Supply £49.99
1 x Antec 100 One Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black £41.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 32MB Cache - OEM (ST31000524AS) £39.98
1 x Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) £39.98
1 x Samsung SH-S222AB/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £16.99
Total : £619.40 (includes shipping : £13.75).

I also included RAM, if you check the link, the RAM is a lot smaller than the ripjaws you have and has no real word performance difference so as well as the CPU, if you could return the RAM then you couldn't run into issues regarding the CPU cooler and the RAM, you should also note that I specced the motherboard that I did because it came with a good free CPU cooler as well as being a good motherboard. If you went for a different mobo then a seperate cooler would need to be purchased also

im not sure on competitor prices, but if you got it at £150 then you could sell it off for a tidy profit, especially if its unopened. it retails for £225 on OcUK

Never thought of that, good plan :p

Also kas, check my post.

i've started frantically searching the web for this £150 i7 2600 in hopes of buying up all their stock and reselling at a super profit :p

sadly ive had no luck, but if the OP wants to send me the link via my trust (dont post it on the forums) i would be very interested

I fear that it may be due to such low demand that the price is so low. If someone is willing to spend such money on a CPU then I normally I think people would spend the bit extra for the 2600k or a bit less for the 2500k, I don't know how many people who are knowledgeable about the overclockability of each CPU would want one which would not overclock. Therefore I think that selling may be difficult.
Good luck though :p

im afraid they are all out of stock. sorry.

Yep thanks a lot buddy. any noticeable difference with 8gb ram compared with 4gb? Do you think the antec psu are better than the corsair ones?
good price for that psu btw
