Im about to replace my broken 5th gen Intel system, that had an unexpected mug of coffee. Ive managed to recover a few of the components like the GTX908ti, a 750w gold rated ATX Power supply (SuperFlower I think) and 8 sticks of 4GB DDR4 2133Mhz Corsair LPX memory and the several SSD’s I had installed. All have been checked and seem to be still working still, although have a nice smell of coffee…
i was planning on building a ITX system using a AMD cpu and gpu, I quite like the idea of a small footprint system. Planned use is mainly for MSFS2020 plus some non AAA games like assassin's creed, elite dangerous etc. Anyway was looking at something like a Ryzen 9 5900X and a RTX 6800 / 6800XT.
I could reduce some of the cost by rescuing the PSU but then I'm going down the route of a ATX build. Also i think MSFS may benefit from 32GB ram, although i may have got this wrong.
So the reason for this post is that now there is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, so should i go for this processor instead. The 100mb of L3 cache seems to have some big benefits in MSFS but seems to be less beneficial in normal productivity use. Watched a good video by PremiumBuilds on youtube and his testing seems to suggest a big benefit in having more L3 cache for MSFS2020.
So advice I’m looking for is if starting from scratch should i go with the new CPU or go with the Ryzen 9 5900X. I know AM5 is around the corner but not sure i would want to jump on the new architecture straight away. I know if i go down the AM4 route swapping to AM5 is a new motherboard and cpu etc.
Also on the question of motherboards what chipset is advisable for either of these cpu’s? Im not into overclocking so dont new anything that gives me the availability to overclock.
i dont know much about AMD hardware so some advice would be much appreciated.
