New build - around £650 - light gaming

A step up to the 1500x looks like a good idea!

I have done a bit of research on the Ryzen processors and RAM but I still cant' get my head round it.

I won't be overclocking and I don't really think I will be "tuning" RAM. So I do just get 3000MHz and just plug and play?

Or do I just get 2400MHZ to give me plug and play?

thanks

The 1500X is a worthy jump for £20 - and will give you gains now and in the future - especially as you wont be overclocking.

There's no guaratee you'll hit 3000MHz but with each BIOS/AGESA release 3000/3200MHz is getting easier to hit. ANd that combo of memory and motherboard has had good success - but still hit and miss with each user (latest BIOS always essential).

The 3000MHz Corsair sticks i listed can hit 2933MHz (straight out of the box) with no clock applied. Literally by setting the XMP - but this is always coupled with the latest BIOS - the F4 offical or F5c BETA this particular board. But - again not guaranteed.

If you can't hit 2933MHz should hit hit 2667 at 1.35V - while you wait for a 3000MHz/3200MHz stable BIOS release...

Thanks Plec. So just to confirm. I should just buy 3000Mhz yeah? and depending on the updates I apply to the motherboard, the motherboard will just keep getting closer to that speed.

Will I run into any problems getting the 3000?

I certainly wouldn't buy a lesser speed (3000 is the minimum) - Ryzen loves and performs better with faster memory - there's a direct performance correlation.

As mentioned previously, the Corsair sticks have a good hit ratio of hitting 3000Mhz with the latest BIOS releases (the 3200MHz sometimes hit 3200MHz). But yes future updates will only increase the chances of memory compatibility - that's as much as i can speculate.

Not really, you may experience cold boot problems if it's not fully stable (or an obvious boot loop) - but it's a simple process of knocking the memory multiplier down if that was the case.

  • Flash BIOS
  • Set XMP
  • make sure 1.35V at 2933MHz
  • save exit
If that fails - reduce the multiplier.
