So GPU prices are crazy, Ryzen 7 soon, Nvidia 4000 series soon, DDR5 overpriced, but I want a PC now lol.

So heres the scenario for a current build I'm thinking and the situation possibly 3 to 12months from now. About a £300 loss, if bought now.

!Sanity check thread!

What are you using the PC for?

I'd be inclined to look at a 12400f, ddr4 board (maybe the MSI Mortor) and DDR4 3600c16 as obvious cost savings

So I wanted the option of TB4 for future upgrade to a USBC monitor, and the use of a dock - the PC would be hidden away (2m away) and single USB C cable and external PC power switch visible.
And mainly for gaming at 1440p 120+hz - and some 4k tv gaming, some web dev (mac for that tho), some video/photo editing too.

Obviously the 3770K is showing it's age, but your 1080 still a great GPU to get by on right now. Ryzen 7000 CPUs are rumoured Sep/Oct launch. Nvidia 4000 series is rumoured Jul/Aug but I'm struggling to believe that one personally! It's possible, but don't hold your breath.

If I were you, I'd either wait for the whole upgrade (4 months time roughly?) or if you're dying to upgrade now - go cheap(er), so your outlay is less if you think you'd want to upgrade to a Ryzen 7000 CPU later in the year. As that will require a new CPU and mobo. RAM can be re-used as AM5 is DDR5 afaik, so buying DDR5 makes sense (bizarrely, even though the perf increase is sod all).

So for now at best I'd get something like the below. New mobo, CPU, RAM, NVME and PSU. The 12400F offers great performance for the money. NVME if you want a proper upgrade get a Gen4 drive as spec'd. Re-use your 1080 GPU as it's still a great for now. Then if you go Ryzen 7000 and Nvidia 4000, you can swap that out easily enough and just sell on your 12400F cpu, Z690 ITX mobo and 1080 as and when - probably quite easily at not too much a loss.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,078.88 (includes delivery: £0.00)

haha yes 3770k is showing its age. As is the 1080 tbh. Ive not bothered with RDR2 or Cyberpunk for that reason. So based on my own research, I may be at a loss of £300 or so within 3-6 months, but there no guarantee of GPUs being available or at a decent price.

Im going to a gen3 NVME since its cheper and doesnt have noticeble performance for windows loading or game load which are my main usecases for fast ssd.

Selling mid range items will be moe of a pain to shift used and a bit of hassel so rather avoid. Instead do what I did with 2500k (2012), sold on ebay and upgraded to 3770k in 2018.

And Mobo whilst expensive is featured packed. Especially TB4, which I want to keep my setup nice and clean, and PC a few meters from desk, so single cable and external PC power switch.

So add another 250 to above build, and u get an true i5 and featured packed mobo. Which is just abou worth it I feel.

Consider the Corsair P3P (on sale right now at OCUK)

If I were a betting man I'd wager that the 12400f will be easier to shift and retain more value than the chip a step up.

I suspect this will be a much greater margin. Think 2018 for GPUs and 2013 for CPUs. A lot of very cool new stuff seems to be coming very soon (if you can't tell I've bought into the hype )
