Hi guys.

time to build a new PC

so, whats best bang for buck for me, ATI or intel?

the PC will mainly be used as a HTPC but i also want to be able to play games on it (GTA V, fifa & witcher). i want it to be near silent when viewing media.

i guess the options are Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz or an unlocked piledriver (or even APU). and which would be a good overclocking mobo for these chips? what is a nice quiet HSF solution?

from what i can see intel gives me a better response time for normal usage but the additional cores will help with gaming? i dont really do much video editing or transcoding.

is 16gb ram really worth it for what i want to do?

i am planning on getting an nvidia 970 as they seem to run quiet and be best value for money compared to ATI.

For your usage the Intel i5 K would be better. While the AMD FX8 CPU might have "8 cores", each of the individual cores are much slower than the Intel's (and when not all 8 cores are used, its performance fall behind the i5 K), and i5 is generally a better performaning all-rounder and runs cooler (meaning quieter as well); AMD FX8 runs much hotter and power-hungry, and is very poor choice for a HTPC.

8GB memory is still plenty for gamings at the moment...and you wouldn't really "need" more than that unless you do stuff like encoding videos or editing huge image or audio files.

As for value for graphic card goes, AMD's 290x is better bang for bucks than the 970 and has 512MB more vram than the 970 which games can fully utilize, however it comes with the cost of won't performing as well in Nvidia sponsored titles, as well as higher power consumption and running hotter, so they are not as ideal as the 970 for HTPC build.

if you can fit it in your budget then go Intel.

I am currently running 6GB of ram and my games etc all run fine with no issues :)

only reason for getting 16GB over 8GB is down to cost, again if it can fit in to your budget and its not that much more then get it as if you ever need 16GB you have it already.

ah you buggers. stop taking up all the thread. yes, i meant AMD. hadnt had my coffee when i created this!

ok, so i5k seems to be the way to go. whats a good mobo for it?

also looking for a nice quiet case. doesnt need to be too small. midi to full tower would be good, i have been looking at the be quiet! ones, they also include a free HSF.

but isnt this always the case? a new CPU is always around the corner ;)

and wont they be top dollar when they release anyway? or do you mean it will knock DC prices down?

For the first point, to me this is a bit of a fallacy. We're never always a month or two off another socket/better performing CPU. Broadwell is probably like launching this month, but I have no idea if there's a replacement for the 4690K/4790K (Or any i5/i7 k), it'll be on the same socket as Devils Canyon. As for Skylake, Intel are attempting to launch this year. To be honest, for confusion of what's happening, maybe DC would be best.

And secondly, not really. They'll probably just replace the CPU's at their current price points.

from what i just read broadwell wont do much other than lower power usage. i guess this might mean a modest heat improvement too. doesnt sound like its worth waiting for from what i just read. Skylake may be but how many months away is that?

Well, Broadwell's meant to launch this month, and Broadwell will still give some meager performance improvements etc.

For Skylake, I'm not entirely sure. I'd at least see how this month turns out in regards to Broadwell, but if not, there's nothing from with DC.

ok, so what would be a good ocing mobo? its so easy to get lost in the features on motherboards. a quiet one would be nice. but i guess we dont have noisy NB fans any more? im a bit out of touch now! ever since i became a dad my toy budget is pretty lousy lol

Broadwell's not getting any K's.
As it happens, it's actually "launching" now.

Skylake's apparently in August/September or on a new socket (New socket confirmed)

And as far as boards, there's not any as far as I know with fans on 1150 (Maybe one at a push?)

ok, so what chipset on the 1150? there are bloody loads to choose from. please help me select a better option than the 2 bloody nforce boards i had that were crap!

edit: maybe SLI option would be good, need a PCI-e x1 slot too for my TV tuner card.
