hey all,

so memory for the new build. running another topic on many other parts of this build but spose the ram changes what mobo is needed so need to pin down the spec now.

currently looking at running:
4770k (OC to at least 4.4ghz)
gtx780 (single card, + overclock)
ga-z97x-ud5h
and maybe some Corsair Vengeance Pro Series Red, PC3-21300 (2666), CAS 12-13-13-35, 1.65V
going to watercool both cpu and gpu and overclock both

would like to run the fastest ram possible but don't really want to spend a fortune on memory alone as there are many other parts to this upgrade.

Will be used for gaming and CAD rendering.
so what ram should i be running for this build?

not that RAM - those timings are too slow for the frequency to be decent.

Some options:

YOUR BASKET
1 x G.Skill TridentX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C10 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (F3-2400C10D-8GTX) £79.99
1 x TeamGroup Xtreem LV "Frost Edition" 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C10 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit £79.99
1 x Avexir Golden Blitz 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C10 2400MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (AVD3U24001004G-2BZ1SE) £79.99
1 x Kingston HyperX 8GB (2x4GB) PC3-14900C9 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black/Gold (HX18C9BGK2/8-OC) **I52 PROMO** £59.99
Total : £309.56 (includes shipping : £8.00).

The last set are more budget-oriented but still good (I'd take them over C12 2666Mhz), the others are all good. I'd go for the G.Skill personally.

If you want to spend more on slightly faster stuff then you could go for:

YOUR BASKET
1 x G.Skill TridentX Fan 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C9 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (F3-2400C9D-8GTXD) £89.99
Total : £98.69 (includes shipping : £7.25).

Should work just fine :)

It's not on the memory support list for that board but this is often the case for RAM that is totally compatible as vendors seldom keep these lists up to date.

Basically yes - but some mobos have trouble with particular RAM. Not heard of any having trouble with this though. The idea is you can find out if it's guaranteed to run, but it makes little real difference.

Also, mobos will run loads of RAM speeds they don't mention too, like your old mobo says it suypports 1600MHz then nothing up to 2800MHz but looking at the QVL we see it works with loads in between

Edit: Just getting another 4GB (2*2GB sticks) of slow 1600MHz RAM would also be fine as I see you mentioned in another of your threads. You don't need to replace with faster stuff and if not doing so allows you to afford a better graphics card then that's probably worth it.
