Hi, I have recently built a new gaming computer for the first time and have been having problems that i cant get to the bottom of. I have tried loads of things but still cant solve it. When i startup the computer the windows load bar freezes and i have to reset etc to try again has done this from first boot up. Some times it works and doesnt freeze and then the next time it doesnt, Im pulling my hair out with this. See below for my spec:

Asus Rampage 2 Extreme
I7 930 2.8 GHz
6 Gb Geil Ram
1000w Corsair PSU
Asus standard supplied sound card
V8 Coolermaster CPU Cooler
1TB samsung
Vista 64

Ive tried the following:

Disabling startup Items via msconfig
updating all drivers
updating BIOS driver
Checking all cables are connected properly
Removing Ram and trying 1 etc
Removing sound card
clearing CMOS
re-installing Visa 64 (several times)
upgraded from 700w to 1000w PSU as i thought that may be the fault
Re formatting the hardrive

Ive tried all these and possibly more that i cant remember but have had no joy whatsoever. I bought all the components new so is a complete new build. Please could anyone assist if possible?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

What makes were the PSU?

Have you tried running memtest, as you may have a faulty stick, you can run this from a bootable ISO.

sounds to me like to low a voltage setting on your cpu whilst in the bios check your sata settings as well make sure they not set to raid as this will affect boot up

if this dont help i suggest u remove ur cpu and check the socket pins one might be bent

Ive run memtest a few times and have had no errors at all. !!

If it was a bent pin on the CPU would it still allow me to use the computer? As im using it just now, If it doesnt stick and it gets passed the load screen its perfect.

The PSU's are coolermaster.

Which voltage setting do you think may cause a problem like this? I will go check the RAID settings just now as well

its an HD 4870 x2

Ive just checked the sata setup and its set to IDE. so not RAID.

This may sound stupid as im new to this, On the Manual for the motherboard it give a qualified vendor list for memory. My memory (GEIL) isnt on the list. Would that cause an issue or should it be compatible? clutching at straws here :-(

Ive also attached some images of CPUID to see if anyone notices any obvious errors!

1. raise cpu voltage a notch. (1.244 currently).
2. QPI link 2975MHz, maybe reduce a touch? Also NB 2646MHz

Not too brill on Intel, but gut feeling.

No same get the same problem on safe mode, so i take it that rules out drivers?? Correct me if im wrong.

My CPU voltage has been increased to 1.250v but still the same

Yea I guess so, my first thought would be psu but as you've changed that I thought drivers becouse you said it freezes at the Windows load bar which is the point where the drivers are loaded.

Looks like you are getting to the stage where you will need to start removing, swapping bits to find the culprit.

Hmm that's where it gets expensive! Well I can rule out
sound card!as it does it with that removed!
Gpu! well I'd need to find one to try or buy another new one Unless there's a way to test it?

Memory! I'd need to buy new to try that!
Psu! I've tried

Anything else I've missed??

I think something similar can happen when the thermal paste on the CPU is either missing or not very well applied.

It's something to check if you're running short on ideas.

when i bought all the components and fitted them the I7 chip cam with a standard fan which i installed, it was doing it with that. Now ive installed a coolermaster V8 and used artic silver paste and its still doing it. So unless im putting the paste on wrong??

What is the correct way ie (thickness of paste)

The last thing i want to do it put it into a shop to get repaired.

Ok ive just re-done the thermal paste and rebuilt the computer, started it up and it worked first time. Went and re started it and back to same problem. Arghhhhhh. lol

Right im going to try a fresh install of vista i think and re format the hard drive. Any tips on this or is it straight forward? Should i partition the drive or is that own preference?

I decided to try a startup repair from the Vista Disc and got this message:

Ive sent it to windows as it recommended so see what they say, Anyone able to shed some light on this? Thought id do this is a last option before doing a fresh install.

Cheers

Is the ram running at the correct timings in the BIOS, and the correct voltage?

Ram or hard drive errors is likely the culprit, memtest isnt great at 6gb ram.
What GeIL ram is it? It should have the voltage on the sticks or the box.
