Hi ,

Im about to do my first build , I have it all mapped out ( in my head ) and im ready for the job in hand .

However ... At the point i have loaded all my drivers ,chipset drivers , anti virus stuff i have to connect to the internet for updates ... my question is this ...

I have AOL as my isp and i connect via a modem ... I have the modem on all the time and never actualy have to connect to AOL ... do i still have to instale all the AOL disc in order for me to connect with my new PC .... or can i just bung an RJ in the back of my new PC and connect it to my modem ?

Hope that question makes sence ...

Thanks in advance

Maddad

If it's always on and connects via ethernet it's probably got saved config in the modem. USB ones tend to save it on the PC. Best way to find out is set the ip address and gateway (if required) and see what happens.

Hi ,

well i thoght it can't hurt to just try plugging it in my new machine...It worked

No AOL disc , no config ...Just fired up the new machine pluged in the modem ...turned it on ...few lights flashed and bam... connected to the net :)

I was totaly amazed.... and im just about to do a speed test to see what im getting ...feel's much faster than my old PC

Communications 1.7 megabits per second
Storage 206.5 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 5 seconds
Subjective rating Great

Not bad i suppose :)
